Double sided rgb strips?

Late the other night while flipping through Ray Wu's store I could have sworn I saw double sided rgb strips "lights on both sides of the strip".

At the time I was looking for something else so I moved right along, now after searching his site I can't find them. Was this just my brain farting or do these exist and I'm just not holding my mouth right while searching.

Anyone seen these? Digital or dumb led either one.

Not thinking of this are you?

Nope that's not them. I actually sat down today and clicked on each description of every led strip on Ray's site and never saw them so it must have been my imagination. I was thinking they would be cool for an rgb spiral tree next year. I guess I could do it with 2 strips with the backs glued together but wow that would be 32 strands at $75 a strand so roughly $2400 in rgb lights for maybe a 10 ft mega spiral and a craptastic amount of channels but hey it would look very cool. LOL

Which strands are you looking at that are $75 a pop? I like the $32 a strand myself....

Sorry I was talking about doing individual pixel "digital" rgb strips but I still got the price wrong. They are actually $80 a pop or $106 if you buy them with the controller but I think I may consider doing it with the $32 strips. I was thinking having say the bottom half be green and the top half red while it all spiraled up to turn into warm white would be a cool affect but a sequencing nightmare. But hey I got a whole year to plan and sequence so anything is possible.

For that price so am I. Correct me if I'm wrong but does that say free shipping as well? I may just order a strand of those right now just to test the quality. Have you by any chance ordered any from them in the past?

I have a lot of those strips (the 30 LEDs per meter and the 60 LEDs per meter) but getting solid, reliable connections on the end has been a problem. Soldering works if there is no possible movement but keeps breaking loose out in the wind and rain.

Just an idea for you. You might try to reinforce the solder joint area by coating/encapsulating it with epoxy. That would give you a very tough shell around the connections.
Without seeing one I can't think of any other solution. Guess I better buy a string and see how they work and are constructed to be of more help.

I am interested in these types of strips as well. Particularly what kind of controller do they need and how does it interact with the LOR system for programing the strips?

Thanks
Bill

I have used them with several 16 channel DC controllers (the LOR, the D-Light and the Lynx), all using 12vdc to feed the controller and DMX as the protocol.

I also experimented with the small 3-channel DMX boxes, which worked fine but made for more DMX connectors than I liked.

Yea they seem to be a good option. I'm going to try the dc boards from LOR as well for a centralized elements next year but use the small dmx models for elements that are spread far apart and would require power injected into them anyway like firestick stars at the edge of the property.

One downfall I can see to the small dmx modules is once the show is over and they stop receiving a signal from LOR they will proceed to a factory programmer random sequence of fades and color changes. I will have to sort out how to kill the power to stop these between shows. I'm thinking I may take an extra pc controller and have all 16 channels stay on for every sequence then when the show ends it will kill power to 16 or however many I set up of those dmx modules. I just need to sit down and do the math and figure out which option will come out more economical. Oh and this isn't a problem with the digital/pixel based strips. Once they stop recieving a signal from LOR they actually shut of.

Still got a few kinks to work out but I'm determined to get it all sorted for next years show.

Well Thank You Andy for posting the info and links on DMX. I will spend some time and look those over here soon.

I do have to buy the S3 software yet and learn it as well. I just didn't want to change things just before show startup this year so I am waiting till after the new year (although yes I could get it and install it on a spare computer and play I guess).

I am curious as to whether you are going to go with the regular RGB strips or with the digital/pixel strips?
I wonder too how much extra work having the RGB controllers just running random will entail or just start out with the digital strips right from the start?
Tough to decide yet as this is pretty new as well. I am sure that over the next few months someone will probably figure an easy way to hack the DMX controllers for RGB and make them shutdown when signal input drops (or make some form of a power controller to run them that would sense data stopping and shut them down).

Great stuff to ponder and study on though. Wish I had as easy a time finding enough work for income as I do trying to spend what I don't have - LOL.

@John, I am looking forward to it!
@Bill, no problem. There is a lot of useful info in there.
@Jeff, what is the difference between he dream color strips on rays site and just the normal 6803 strips I linked above for $80?

Oh and Jeff I'm not clear on wether or not these... http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/484414010-Hot-Sell-128-node-led-pixel-string-DC5V-0-3W-wholesalers.html
Will allow individual bulb control or whole string control. It says they are pixel based but below in the description says "chip quantity 1" Grrrr some of those descriptions are so hard to read.

It would take a few extra steps to waterproof the string based pixels but may be worth it for the price rather than buying 2 strips per run up a spiral/weber tree.

I have a good size order of strips and controllers coming any day from Ray. They are the 6803 strips with dmx controllers. I'm waiting on an answer from Ray about the chip used in the nodes. (trankin79) has talked about these in another thread. http://forums.lightorama.com/forum75/30466.html
We are thinking 3 strips can be run off 1 dmx controller. I have ordered enough stuff to test this out and will report when I know for sure.

Great info Jeff. I'm looking forward to building a whole new show based off all these products. I went ahead and ordered 3 different dumb rgb strips from 3 different suppliers with prices ranging from $20 to $55 shipped. I plan to test these next month and leave them out on the deck for the rest of winter to run em till the wheels fall off so to speak. Price is definatly a concern but quality is as well. I don't want to be replacing these after only one season. I will report back what I find. I also am looking to control all these with DMX as well. I absolutely agree that we have an awesome resource here to share our results of products ordered out of China so we can all benefit from others good/bad experiences.

Donny, Please do post back your findings as the more info we can all collect will hopefully end up giving us a solid list of products we can work with this year.
