Tips to make visualizer run "faster/smoother?"

Hello!

 

I have a small little laptop (practically a netbook) I use for programming. While it works fairly well, it has a hard time with the visualizer when the programming is more than a few lights chasing at a time.

 

I went into the computer settings and turned off all the flashy windows features but was hoping for advice on how to optimize my computer so the programming doesn't become choppy during heavy-sequence periods.
