I saw a post earlier for a $30 device to bridge phases, but on the same website there's another version for $8. What gives? Did I miss something???

[*]The one for $8 is passive, non-amplified. About the same as just using a 50 cent capacitor across the two hot legs.

Which one would should you buy? Amplified?

I'd like to order some of this X10 stuff but I'm as clueless as them come as to what you need besides a cm11a.

For now I would just like to control three outdoor outlets.

Amplified!! Helps get a strong signal bridged across the two power line legs and overcome noise on the wiring in the house that is generated by refrigerators, freezers, small motors and switching power supplies in computers etc.

EDIT:

This is the one I've been using for the last 10 years or so. (The price has gone up some during that time !) But it WORKS solid.
