Generic RS485 USB Adapter & LOR RJ45 (8P8C) Pinout

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Confirmed: Generic USB to RS485 or RS232 (with converter) as COMM (COM) port works for LOR network.

Not tested: Max Distance to first unit (or subsequent units)

LOR Controller - Ethernet - Cat5e - Pinout (T568B):

  1. OW - DMX Data+
  2. ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎O - DMX Data-
  3. GW - +9V
  4. ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎B - LOR Data+
  5. BW - LOR Data-
  6. ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎G - LOR Gound
  7. BW - DMX Ground
  8. ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎B - Unused

Methodology & Info:

I tested with HW utility & a single controller with ~6ft Cat5e cable.

I used a B+B WORX USPTL4-LS for the USB>RS485 test

I used a UGREEN FTDI based USB>RS232 (I think model 20218) with DTech DT-9003 RS232>RS485 converter

Not Tested: Prolific chip

Why:

Can't find my USB485B or USB485 LOR converters. The show must go on.

To clarify this, a LOR controller does not have separate pins for DMX. A LOR controller (at least the AC and DC controllers) only use pins 3,4,5,6. If the controller receives a DMX signal on pins 4&5, it will switch to DMX mode.

Thank you for catching my mistake.

I wish I could edit the OP. Perhaps with more post count the forum will open-up.

I cannot seem to find a LOR RJ45 Pinout Reference document. I would really like to have direct sources for this info.

Attached is an .xlsx with various pinouts.

Trying to do the same thing you have done, as I don't have time or money to get the LOR Adapter. Have the same Dtech 9003 adapter, but am having trouble getting my controller to show up in software. This is my first year trying to do a show, is there a driver you need to install for the adapter? I have a CTB16PC controller, have the wiring the same as in your picture. Red light is still blinking when everything is connected. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LOR keeps their wiring/design under wraps.

Not really... LOR uses the center two pins for RS485 data (LOR or DMX network) an the pins on either side of those for a nominal voltage (9V IIRC) to control accessories.

I asked them for their wiring info long ago and was politely denied. I understand its probably as you state which is great for all of us and Thank You. Maybe they were more concerned with their rs485 protocol to the adapter...who knows.

@lightingman117 Are you able to assign unit ID's from the hardware utility using a generic RS485 adaptor?
