CCP-II 50: Can't connect after standalone sequence set, except with hard reset

I'm new to LOR, so please bear with me.

We've got some CCP-IIs, to light up our eaves, a bottle tree, and eventually an address sign.

We want to celebrate multiple holidays throughout the year: Mardi Gras, Valentine's Day, Fourth of July, etc. in addition to Christmas.

The plan was to set up standalone sequences on the different controllers. And ideally be able to update them via the wireless ELLs throughout the year. The first step is to just have separate standalone sequences on each controller. We can graduate later to shows, but to start out we just want to set the colors on the lights to match the holiday and have some simple effects (twinkle, etc.). And to be able to update the standalone sequences from inside the house, as some of the controllers will be up under the eaves.

What I'm stuck on now is that we've got one CCP-II 50 controller where once I download a standalone sequence on it, the controller can no longer be selected in the Hardware Utility. Until the unit is reset through the reset button. This is happening when the CCP-II is directly connected to a PC. With no other controllers connected.  [We also have a CTB04 to drive power to the remote ELL, but right now I'm just testing it connected to the laptop.]

Having to pop off the cover to do a hard reset, before a new standalone sequence can be installed, kills the idea of "easy holiday updates."  I hope I'm just doing something stupid. Or is this how CCP-IIs work?

I'm running LOR software 5.5.16, and have the 1.06 CCP-II firmware installed on the controller.

Any help is appreciated.
