FM Help!!!

Ok guys i have a new neighbor about 8-10 blocks away and he is using my radio station I have been using for a few years. I use an EDM FM transmitter and would like to know how to overpower his!!. I currently onlyt have the small wire antenna that came with the transmitter as I am not sure which to buy. Is the rubber duck one ok? I will go and talk to him in the morning, but I want to be prepared in case he doesn't care. What is the distance you are aloud to transmit? I thought it was only like 2 blocks?

To start with, politely go talk to him.  If he is stomping you out 8 blocks away, you might remind him that his is transmitting a far in excess of legal power for FCC Part 15 operation.  Tell him that you have been using the frequency for years and you two should be able to co-exist if he drops his power to something close to legal.  If that does not work, there are options to improve your signal, but a poiwer war is not really the way to do it.  One of the closest shows to me shares my frequency without any trouble at all.  We're a mile or so apart and on a really good coverage day, we do not meet.

Well I just got back from talking to him and I started out just telling him how cool his show was and asking about his setup. Then I calmly and casually mentioned I am almost 2 miles away and he is transmitting that far and he said oh well. I don't have time to make a new sign to change my frequency. I was very surprised he abruptly said no (with a very stern no I might add) SO I guess I can either find a way to transmit over him or call someone, but calling someone would be my last resort as, even if he is not nice he is still a light enthusiast, and I would never want to discourage anyone from helping people smile.

He is obviously transmitting on high power so maybe he doesn't know how to switch it to low power. If you go over and explain that and show him how to switch to low power then all should be good.

Mr. P I actually already talked to him about that and he said I like it where it is. I am trying to be the bigger person here and I will change stations next year, but for now I already have a sign made and can't get a new one quick enough and it is too close to CHRISTmas to shut it down until it arrives.

Jerk!

What are you using for an antenna?  I take it that in your viewing area, he stomps over your signal.  As I said in my first post, a power war is not the answer, but I can help you.

OP said they are using wire antenna that came with transmitter.

IIf it's waiting on a new sign versus visitors not being able to listen to display with old frequence, I'd cobble up your current sign to reflect new frequence.  black out old number and make new number iwth tape, etc.  Maybe check around for some reflective vinyl tape that would show up from headlights.

If  your "neighbor" is in violation of any non-commercial transmittal laws, I 'd report the AH.

Well I thought about that, but do you think any of the enforcing agencies would care about one guy for Christmas? But I do agree, just trying to be the bigger person( the little guy on the other shoulder says physically teach him a polite lesson, like what my momma taught me)

Throw this in his bushes someplace.

HAHA, I do have a neighbor that lives pretty close to him? I am sure it will come back around to him in 1 way or another. I did go drive the distance I could hear and it was 1.3 miles. WHY?

Unlicensed, low power transmitters must be FCC certified and the antenna must be either non-removable or fitted with a unique connector to dissuade replacement with an antenna that would provide more range to the transmitter.   It seems extremely unlikely that a low-power FM transmitter came with anything other than a small rubber antenna.    If it can be established that he's modified the antenna system, then you might notify the local FCC field office of the issue.

Outside of that, unlicensed stations (operating under Part 15 of the FCC rules) have no recourse to interference they receive.

Maybe he’s a forum member and will read this thread, if you use that device I linked above just don’t throw it where I said or he’ll surely find it.

Maybr he will read it’s a violation of federal law and lower his settings. If not file the complaint. Take it to your local news.

Best of luck.

Guy is being a dick.  If you can't out power him,  turn him in.  You tried being nice, and he won't even discuss it? I don't know of any small scale stock transmitter that would broadcast 2 miles, and out power another from that distance.  The man is breaking FCC law, and there is no reason for it.  Sounds like he wants to be the only show in town,  and he clearly doesn't care if it stops your show, so why be worried about offending him, or upsetting him?  After showing that attitude,  I would start broadcasting  audio from porn over his show.  FCC would be there quickly.  If you do not want to go that far,  I would invest in a more powerful transmitter, and make every waking second about ruining his day, and tell him to pound sand when he complains.  No  reason for him to be that way.

Well once again a big thank you to  the light o rama forums. My neighbor was able to see this post and has changed to a different frequency. I did message him back and let him know we can coexist on the same frequency. My show is now back up and running. Also a big thank you to Jim for helping me with the antenna!!! Nice to have all the great friends here to help and support all light enthusiasts. .

You should send him a Thank You card for his understanding and peaceful resolution to the problem. After all this is supposed to be a friendly fun environment. Maybe y'all can become friends and help each other out with your displays and advancement in technology.

That is so funny you just posted that. That is almost verbatim to what I said in my message back

I find that being nice and treating most people kindly is a win win. There  is that 10% though that just don't get it. However while in the Army my fav saying was "do not take my kindness as a weakness". I was on the phone with a person from the forums today and in the background he could hear my 5 yea old boy say "Christmas id for giving". Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but he is gonna be a scrapper.
