My email was Hijacked

Ron Boyd

Recommended Posts

IF you received any emails from me in the last day or so, I apologize. I somehow got Hijacked and sent over 150 emails. I am in the process of getting everything changed over to my new email.

If anyone does need my new one, it is

dariansdad1@comcast.net

Please accept my apologies for this inconvenience. I hope if you did receive one, your AV picked it up and trashed it.

Thanks,

Ron

I don't normally open email from people that just send me something out of the blue.

Unless there from that Nigerian prince I've been helping to get his fortune back. :P

The pictures you sent me were amazing... I do like anatomy. However my boss, she was not impressed.

I'll delete that email then.

Ron I would suggest keeping it around for a little while longer. There is always company's /people who don't get the change notification. Plus there is usually some account that you've forgotten about that is tied to that address.

If it was me I'd delete all contacts & sent /received history. Change the display name on the account to something like hacked or virus. Check it say once a week just to make sure that you got everybody. If you see someone you missed then email them from your new account. Don't send from the hacked one.

Sad part of it all Ron ... your new account is just one bored 12 year old away from being hacked again ...

 bigger isn't always better

Maybe so, but Viagra is still one of the most requested prescription medications!  At lease among adult men.  :D

If I were you I would break up my email address with spaces or periods, I've seen people get spam out the rear end when bots search forums for email addresses.

probably dont need to completely change your e mail... Just change the Password to start with.. You will know in a couple days if that did it or not.. It usually works because your password got hijacked... not all your mail account..

and change it to a good one use a combination of , cap letters, small letters, a symbol or 2 and a number or two...

I would wonder why your changing your email address. If it were me, I'd be making sure the password is changed for starters. Then be looking into how they got the password. Was it something you did or the provider did?

a lot or found by running programs that send out random generated e mail address... If you have noticed when you try to send someone a e mail and it comes back marked unable to send they Have programs that will simply save those for use later or to recheck.. I am not a Internet security tech but I do read a lot about the why they try to get your passwords etc.

A lot use little programs that will find them on your system and send them back to them.. Not all are detected by Norton, Mcafee, AVG etc.

O lot of people use AVG or other free software.... they seem to forget you really do get what you pay for most of the time....   Not saying they are useless but they are better then nothing..

Its can be something as simple as what some call a tracking cookie... etc... there are cookies for all kinds of things that most people never think about...

I have had what the other writer said happen to me just once.... and after that I made sure I have a strong password,,, I do change it once a year... the US Government requires people on their sites which are for mil and mil retirees etc. change every 6 months...

I delete all mt temp files from net sites etc. at least once a week.... I do not save any pass words etc for anything on my comp...

People have to remember... the right hacker gets into your system if you have banking account numbers, pass words etc. saved on it... you are just inviting trouble in the future..

Like I said... change your pass word to a strong one... a strong one is a combination of Small letters, capital letters, numbers and symbols... and please dont use stuff like your kids names. pets names, password, admin01,123ABC456def!! and don't use your wife's, kids grand kids names... was just some  fast examples.. oh and for those that say for you to answer questions... write the question down.. answer it but do not give a true answer on it... if my mothers maiden name is Jones.... I know that but tell them it is Smith.... why give them info that real companies like Banks etc. has?

Change your pass word and see what happens if your friends keep getting random e mails that say they are from you? I am guessing you are the father of Darian and I hope you didnt use the kids name or another kids name in your pass word..

Most of these email hijacks are not directed to you per say. What the hacker really wants is to infect everyone in your contact list. Usually with an infected attachment or link. Once they're infected they'll either send out emails to their contacts or put a trojan on your system. What alot of them are really after is to create a botnet for DOS attacks.

Passwords should not be words found in any dictionary. There is software out there for brute force attacks ( going through dictionary words guessing passwords )

Old Sarge gives some extremely good advice that should be listened too. A good AV program is important and it only works if you scan at least once a week, along with its background sensing software that tests for malicious hacking attempts on the fly. As he said, you get what you pay for. Strong passwords are just as important and change them from time to time. Do not ever open emails or touch the hyperlink within an email, even if you know who it came from, unless.....you check with that person and/or were expecting an attachment or link. When I exit a browser, I always have the system automatically delete all of the cookies.

If you surf various sites that are subject to possible hacking, such as adult, game sites, software crack sites and etc....expect to get hacked, however, you or anyone can get hacked. The simple rules that Old Sarge suggested, will help a whole lot to keep you protected.

oh I forgot to say a couple more things to help keep your system safe..

Even here on LOR forums etc.... do not use your main e mail address.... Use one that you can afford to get hacked if it happens.... Like everywhere don't trust people you don't actually know and even then be picky..

I recommend to use a mail for sending and receiving things you share etc, here,,, a different for other e mails such as back and forth to family, etc. don't keep all your eggs in one basket so to speak.. use a different one for junk stuff and for places that make you register to get onto their web site... I do not go on a few christmas sites because they make you register... just to see what they have to sale or the price of something... they never get any of my business..

and SCAN EVERYTHING... I know.... some will say it slows things down... it does but isnt it better to be a little slow on getting some things then it will be to end up opening something that wipes out all your computer files or locks things up so you can not open anything again?..

Old Military habit I have... I scan all incoming mail and attachments before opening them or saving them... I also am set to scan all outgoing things even if it is an attachment in case I forward something that was sent to me to help keep from spreading anything.

I dont mind waiting an extra 30 seconds for something to load or open... Its a lot better then spending hours later or having to go out and get a new computer.. or have a lot of work done on this one..

I also do not do everything on the same computer... this is a old one... used for mostly playing with lor etc. on...

I save things on a external hard drive and put it on a different computer used for my shows and even that one is never really used to sure the net with... Then again... my 3rd computer... the main one for when I order anything on line and use my credit card etc... it completely different... None are linked together... and the main one is never left turned on and connected to the net... there are to many back doors into computers and you cannot close them all...

and never never never make a copy if all your pass words for different sires, places, accounts etc. and save them on your computer in a word, excell or any other program...

If you have to print out a copy of them do it on a comp that you do not connect to a network or just write them down old style and save the note book someplace if you need it.

Just saying.... Like we are or use to be told in the Military all the time... always be safety conscious and aware of what you are doing etc.

a little information here and there can add up..

I empty my cookie files, and history and catch files almost everyday or after I have been surfing the net for anything.... doesnt take but a few clicks and maybe 30 seconds to do it..

Guys, while I appreciate all the tips for keeping my email safe, all these things are already and have been done for years, I have used the same email address for about 8 years plus 3 others, since my son was born. This is the first time I've been hacked. I keep all of my passwords changed from time to time, I have a firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-spam, anti-malware, all kept up to date. I keep windows up to date, I clean regularly, at a minimum once a week. I run scans with my "Anti" softwares at a minimum, once a week. I've been messing with computers for over 15 years now and I know all of this stuff.

Not to be a butt head or anything, but I was just letting folks know, that if they had the email that was hacked, please PM me for the new one and to apologize for any spam they may or may not have gotten. There were actually a couple of folks from these forums that warned me I had been hacked.

Thanks for the tips.

As long as your phone number wasn't hacked... I prefer calling you.

It makes me think you are a Trekky when you pull that flip phone out.  :P

Glad to see that you have gotten it worked out.

Ron, we are simply making the case for everyone who uses computers here other than just you alone. Good safety rules for everyone. Yes, it can happen to anyone at anytime. Maybe someone else used this particular computer when you didn't know it or maybe it was a new virus/bug the AV companies hadn't seen yet...new ones are fast and bad. I was hacked once...so far...but I reverse-hacked them back and went after them. I got it down to an address in China where they were operating from, then I "might" have remotely trashed them but only after I "might" have printed out a message on their printer that they chose the wrong person to mess with and politely asked they leave me alone.

Hackers these days are after money or sending spam which will generate money or so they hope. Not too many are after "bragging rights" as the risks are too great. The more serious ones are after military and governmental things but those people won't be here on LOR unless someone is doing lights on an aircraft carrier to music!
