DMX controllers

In the studio we produce, we run DMX controlled lighting to balance skin tones based on the selected background colors

I was wondering if the LOR DMX controller that comes with the cosmic ribbons was proprietary or will a standard RJ-45 to XLR controller from another manufacturer work?

We use the Phillips iPlayer3 to drive our RGB light arrays

It's a little pricey... but since I can get an OEM discount. thought it might be worth doing if it work with the LOR system.

The RJ-45 pinout is not standard. But they sell the correct adapter...

You can use one at the start of the chain, and have several LOR controllers chained together with cat5...

So basically, you're telling me 'yes' another brand DMX controller will work as long as I use the LOR adapter cable to assure correct pin outs.

There are the occasional issues where two particular pieces of equipment don't work together, but the only reason LOR added DMX to the controllers is for compatibility with other hardware. They don't use DMX when talking with their own control hardware/software.

From page 5 of the CCR manual:

"The Light-O-Rama (LOR) Cosmic Color Ribbon is a
flexible ribbon that includes a controller and low
voltage power supply. It understands and
automatically detects both LOR and DMX protocols."

The more interesting DMX topics appear on Pages 15 and 33+
