changing colors of an object

I have trees that can be red, green, clear, or multi. Each on it's own channel. I thought I could put one channel on top of the other in the animation tool, but it does not seem to work. When I put red on top of where green was, the green is gone when I play the animation.

How do you simulate the changing of colors of an object?
