Highly unlikely that you you need the Ethernet crossover cable or adapter.  Almost everything these days does Auto-crossover.

He does need a Static IP if not using a router (not really recommended)

How doe MIIP get to Showtime? WiFi (Wan side)?

As Jim mentioned: modern devices have Auto-xover. That adapter is for when neither can flip.  (I did have a rare case where the fought each other and having the adapter settled the race)

With the cable between the Laptop and the Pixielink.

Are the Link lights (commonly Green) ON at both  ends. Those indicate they see the WIRED (layer 1) connection from the other end. If both, then it is just an static IP issue
