lpeprop importing custom props better?

I have many HD props from GE, EFL, etc . . .  when adding the prop to the preview I always added the vendor's online version and if that was not available, I created an xlights prop and imported that.   Not so recently (like this past summer), in an LOR zoom room they talked about exporting this added prop and then importing the creating the lpeprop to have in your preview.  I do not remember the context on why that was done, but it solved someones problem.  I'm done for this year's show and don't want to make changes as everything works.   I define these props as a dmx type.   My mind wandered on this point as to the reason(s) why importing a lpeprop definition is better than how I've been doing it the last couple of years.  Any thoughts as to why importing lpeprop files for custom props is better?
