Giving out candy canes this year?

To everyone who normally gives out candy canes or any other type of "treats" to visitors of your display, are you planning on giving them out this year as normal? Since moving into our new home 3 years ago I started interacting with visitors some evenings and giving out regular and mini candy canes. I want to do this again this year but with the whole Covid thing not sure it's the best idea. I can easily wipe each individually wrapped mini candy cane with a disinfecting wipe but not sure how it would be perceived. Anyone that normally gives out treats have any ideas?

Hope everyone is well. 😄

Thanks,

Al

As a routine, I only occasionally gave out candy canes in the past.  I am not planning on doing so at all this year.

I feel that Some people would be open to hand out candy canes, others will not.

it al depends on the people.... I handed them out last year also,,,,I personally  will not be doing that this year.

No appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus this year and no candy canes either.  We may sit outside {if I even get a Christmas display up this year} and watch from the small deck area of our handicap ramp, if that.   Even though our Governor has given Florida a 100% green light, there are a lot of folks that disagree with his doing that and are still not taking chances.

BTW: You mentioned Christmas, but what about those folks that normally do Halloween shows?  I'll bet a lot of them aren't giving out treats this year{2020} either due to Covid-19, are you?

I don't do Halloween any longer, and even if we did, we still wouldn't be giving out anything on Halloween this year{2020} either.

My grandkids usually give out candy canes on Friday and Saturday evenings but I will not be doing that this year. And we will not be giving out any Halloween candy either, very disappointing but I think it is the prudent thing to do. I hope we can return to normal for 2021.

im still trying to figure out how to give out Halloween candy. high risk here so I know it wont be myself or my family. Will prob leave the buckets 1/2 down the driveway but that creates a problem with kids cutting through the yard. They have a high risk of getting rebar in their body. Heck I set it up and still get jabbed by it when I forget or turn around to go get my pvc pipe to cover it.

Christmas this year Santa will not be landing in my yard for pictures nor will I be passing out toys to visiting children. What a shame.

As in the past,  full size bars and blinky lights to any who dare approach.    May have to give 2-3 to each as traffic will be down.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the comments. I talked it over with my wife and we are passing on handing out candy canes this year also. She was OK with me going out and saying Hi and thanking visitors for stopping by to see our lights from at least 6' away so I'll do that as much as I can.

It is disappointing as since we moved here three years ago I've been able to  interact with visitors and hand out some candy canes. Oh well, I'm praying things will be back to normal next year. Have a great evening/day.

Thanks,

Al

ToT is over and I have to admit I was wrong with my guess of a slow night.   It was a very good night.  I think traffic was up even from the last two years.   We had very good dry weather this time.   Several groups of 6 - 10 lingered in our cul de sac and visited and we had a great time laughing and telling jokes and wowing the costumes.   Of all the groups who came there were only two wearing masks.   I was kinda expecting more but now that I think about it,  people being the most cautious probably just stayed home.    Not a single person was afraid to approach our three tables, or said a word about the absence of masks.  We let the kids pick their own candy and I was very impressed they all knew to only touch their choice.   This is a hopeful sign from St Louis that things look like they are getting better.

I am happy you had a great turn out. I know you thought about cancelling but you know us diehards can’t do that.

Through thick and thin we look adversity in the eye and continue to bring joy to our communities. One light show at a time.

We also had a huge turnout 600+ based on all treat bags given out and I broke in to my private reserves LOL

Our average though is about 500 between the Teal Pumpkin Project - allergy children and the non allergy children

Thats why I always have so many the TPP posts the address of homes that participate in it.

I was not able to add Bang  will be for New Years.

I didn’t get done repairing lights until 4 pm

So in the end your call did bring me great luck. Power restored as soon as we hung up though I spent hours between my brother in law and sister in law to see who was gonna end up with the generator LOL.

Everyone that came by was happy to see me on the roof repairing and hoped it was all gonna turn out well.

I hate soldering 40+ feet in the air and over my head. But we did what we had to do.

The children loved most of the songs 4/5 - the song that frightened them was They’re Coning to Take Me Away

All night I kept heard daddy/ mommy what is that song about LOL

The other scary part- I put a red balloon in the street drain in front of my house at 10:00 am

All day people wanted to look but no one did LOL

They would have really been shocked at what they would have seen.

I placed the allergy children bags on top of my mailbox and the tote of normal bags next to it.

I sit in my golf cart and chatted with people with mask at a safe distance. All went well.

Santa won’t be at our house this year but I will give toys and such to the children , gonna figure it out . Probably put a blurb on the MIIP page.

Monday I start building Christmas sequences and placing the MIIP command line in.

Thank you my friend.

We had three groups for a total of six kids.  We have lots of candy left (so of course we only bought candy that we like).

Did my usual Pre-Halloween animation on the eves and year round landscaping light starting on Tuesday, then added some music on Halloween (not synchronized).

Now that Halloween is over, the major Christmas show setup begins.  26 days, 9 hours, 17 minutes till opening as I type this.

I had maybe 2 dozen kids ( I even told a Mom, she could have candy for escorting a really small child)

I have started packing up the pieces that will not be used in Dec (or have a different placement).

This year I am leaving the CCR tree and circles where they are for Halloween. I also just staged all of my above ground pvc pipe that I use to run data and power cords. I am hoping that the new window order doesn't get delivered before T-day because I told them if they cant complete the install before T day the work cant be done until the widow frame rgbs come down.

Normally I take everything down for 20 days. But with covid my best friend cant come over to the house so I've been on my own.

All I have left to take down from Halloween is my two monster trees and I have to take the big matrix back inside for the actual repairs from the storm. That should be fun.

It always amazes me that people really have no clue what that song is actually about! LOL   But I gotta admit, even I didn't realize what it was about until I really listened to it a bit more closely in my later years, and I'm not gonna say how late those years were either!🤣 🤣🤣

It's funny to hear what people thought that song was really about when I did Halloween, because so many times it wasn't even close to it's meaning. ROFL

Did you see the videos I posted?

A family parked just within sight and the father walked over to talk but saw I was recording.

You could hear the children (teens) ask him what they song was

I got a chuckle out of that since it was the first time I actually had the question of the night on video.

You referring to the two in your Show Woes thread? {not sure I got that subject quite right}.  I tried watching them, but watching videos online with this current system I'm using usually crashes on me.   Most videos I want to watch I have to download them and watch them through WMP on my computer.  They play fine that way, but online video watching is far too slow and erratic with this ancient PC!

The Woes is not the correct subject. That was for a problem I had.

The video with They’re coming to take me away is a couple boards just under the coffee shop. That’s the one where I captured the children asking their dad about the song.

Sorry on my phone it’s nearly impossible to navigate the forums.
