Comm ports and ethernet - how is thing connected to my PC?

Hello,

I ordered on the sale and am waiting for shipment (was told September!) so I am waiting (but not too patiently). I've been reading, downloaded the software, but there's something I just don't get.

How is my PC connected to the controller? The Hardware Utility refers to Comm ports. Do I need a Comm port on the PC? Why did I order an ethernet CAT5 cable? (Why was one even offered?)

I want to use a laptop computer to control my display. It has a Comm port, but that port also has a built in modem. Exactly what kind of connection do I need? A "serial port," a modem, ethernet, ... I have many PCs to choose from but would prefer to use laptops (that typcially have no external serial ports).

Thanks for the clarification.

Me again ...

Never mind, I finally read the correct manuals (LOR160xW and RS485_Adapters) RTFM

The answer is that I'll plug the RS485B adapter into a USB port and install drivers that will create a "virtual serial port" on the PC's USB port.

Makes sense ...
