Sizing Props

This may belong more in the Visualizer section, but.....I downloaded a few props from users because I can't figure out how to get all the detail other's do. However, when I import the props, they are huge compared to my background image (almost the same size as the whole background).  When i shrink them to the correct fit, they become just a blob of light, and you can't even tell what they are.  How do you guys get your props to fit and look so nice?  All my props look like a first grader drew them with dull crayons.
