Purchased Old LOR1602MP3 - Questions from newbie

I just purchased a Used LOR1602MP# controller/Director   Owner said it works and is like it was when purchased.

 

How can I tell if I need to update the firmware  (Or can I)   Or is there anything else I might need to know.

 

Are there items that won't work because its older?

Most of the LOR users will say this time of year, if it works, don't change your firmware / software until January.

So if you hook it all up and it works, you're in business.

If it doesn't, post some specific questions or comments about what it is doing.
