Taking videos of light shows

I have been trying to take videos of my show but they are not turning out all that great. They are OK but I know they can be better. I have been using a DSLR camera and also tried a camcorder but the lights are not real clear. Does anybody else use a DSLR? What settings do you use? I'm about ready to give up.

Lights will always look different without the use of colored filters, the lens will always catch the brightest light and mute the lowest light. you can overcome this with a good editing program or the use of a really expensive light filtering lenses.Ex:reds and greens will not be as bright as White or Clear.
