Low Power FM station registration is open. If you are a non-profit organiza

Recommended Posts

Low Power FM station registration window is open now.

The FCC modified the law in 2000 to allow a non-profit organization to run its own FM radio station.

Two levels of licenses:

LP100 is Input power 50-100 watts with an expected transmitting range of up to 7 miles.

LP10  is Input power 1-10 watts with an expected transmitting range of up to 2-4 miles.

The window for filing for this license is OCTOBER 15, 2013 to NOVEMBER 14, 2013 (6 PM EST)!

It was created for things like churches, and such. Some rules

Who is eligible for a low power license?

Noncommercial educational non-profit organizations. Individuals may NOT obtain low power licenses. The FCC decided that the new low power service should be noncommercial. Therefore, to obtain a low power radio license, an organization must meet the legal requirements for "noncommercial educational" licensees. A licensee may be a governmental or private educational institution, such as a public school or university or a private school.

In addition, a low power licensee may be a private, not-for-profit organization with an educational purpose. The FCC does not require alicensee to obtain tax-exempt status from the IRS (known as 501©(3) status), but obtaining that status may assist an organization in demonstrating that it is a non-profit to the FCC, and, it may assist the organization in other ways. (For example, the organization will not have to pay federal taxes and some foundations or lenders will not give money to an organization that does not have 501©(3) status.)

The definition of "educational purpose" is very broad. An organization purpose may be to educate the public about virtually any issue. For example, an acceptable purpose might be: to educate the Jonesville community about current political issues, or to educate the migrant worker community about issues important to it. A licensee must show how the programming it will air will further its educational objective.

Why do I post this? Maybe someone has the opportunity to request a license. I , for example, am on the board of the local Highlands Ranch community band, a 501C organization.

Maybe this allows you to have a christmas radio during the year.

Anyways, good luck
