Putting lights on a real tree trunk to make it look like candy cane (help)

Hi everyone, I have a tree that i use its trunk which is about 15 feet tall before any branches come out of it to make it a candy cane out of. can anyone give

me any suggestions on how i can drew the lights on the tree to make it look like a candy cane? what im trying to do is do is a few rows of angled white lights , then a few rows of red copy and paste over and over up the trunk of the tree. White is all one channel and all red has its own channel too.
