tjflory
I have 3 "protectant" sprays.1 says its for cat5 cable ends. (has petroleum distillates)1 is CRC 2-26 electrical spray. (has petroleum distillates)1 is pure silicone spray (no petroleum)Which is best for cat5 cable ends used outdoors?Under what circumstances/ situations would each be appropriate? Thanks!tj Edited August 30, 2012 by tjflory
Calvin
I can say from my experience last year do not use the crc 2-26: it will make the RJ45 connecters brittle and crack them. I thought i'd be smart and just spray them so i would not have to replace any, but i ended up replacing several even before I got them all sprayed, (luckily)
reitan_family
I've never added anything to my cat 5 connectors and never had a problem.

tjflory
Same here. I've never used anything. The reason I ask, I did have some corrosion on 1 of my cat5 connectors in my July 4 show. Now it was a water show so there may have been some water mist in the equation, but I would think dew, rain and snow would be equivalent/ contributing factors as well.tj
Guest wbottomley
If water is corroding your RJ45 connectors, I would worry about board damage at that point.
tjflory
Oh sorry... I was a bit ambiguous there. The corrosion was on cable junctions outside my LOR enclosures.tj

Max-Paul
But if you do want to use Cat5 cable junctions outside of the enclosures. Might look into one of those NO-OX grease in the connector. But the down side is that this grease can and will grab any dirt particles. So, when the cable is not plugged in. I would find some way to cover the socket. tjflory
One solution to this problem is to not use Cat5 cable junctions outside the enclosures. Uh... Yeah... But they're just so damn versatile and convenient (and cheap) (Hi Steve)tj
