For large displays do you buy one big control box or several small ones?

I've been using a 48 channel digital I/O card and am thinking abotu adding 48 moe channels with a triac board. At first I thought I would just buy one or two large capacity boards/boxes. But then I got to thinking... Maybe it would be better to buy several 8 or 16 port cards instead of one or two large port boards.

What do people think?

My thought is several 8 or 16 por boards scattered all over the yard would be allow more fexability and reduce the number and length of extension cords all over my yard.

A 16 channel controller is as large as LOR gets. There are a few members here who put their controllers closer to the objects which reduces the amount of extension cord needed. It really depends on your display, and how comfortable how you are with putting them out there.
