Rick Childers
Hey - just thought I would send out a ping. I am coming to the bottom of two of my 1000 count bags of zip ties, does anyone have any advice on where to get the best pricing?

-klb-
I've been pretty happy with the Northern Tool 4 inch ties at $8 per 1,000. I've got 40 bags of those, and another 16 of other sizes among the other items cluttering up a guest bedroom. And with site to store, my shipping cost was just the gas to drive 20 miles round trip to the store, and opportunity cost for the time.
Santas Helper
It might have just been a bad batch but I bought some at Harbor Freight last year and about 7 or 8 out of 10 broke while pulling them tight :X. I threw the rest of the 100 left in the bag away and went to Lowe's until I found a better deal. Then I found some on ebay from this seller.http://www.ebay.com/itm/170586441630?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649I went thru 1000 already and less than 10 broke while pulling tight. I have placed another order for another 2000 from the same seller. This guy is a fast shipper too.Sometimes cheaper is not the answer when securing items to something else, especially out in the cold elements.Just my experience. Rick Childers
Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the other tips as well, and will keep them on my list. I went to Lowes, and was not happy with the pricing and options. There is a Northern Tool close to where I live, and I have to pass by that area today. I will check them out.I normally go to Altex, but it is a little out of the way this year :http://www.altex.com/4-Nylon-Cable-Ties-Black-100-Pack-AL-04-18-0-C-P149201.aspxBlack 4", 100 for $1.19, 1000 for $10.
Donny M. Carter
Rick, I use the ones from monoprice.com. I also order the 8" instead of the 4", but here are some links.4" are .36 for 100http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10520&cs_id=1052001&p_id=5755&seq=1&format=28" are .77 for 100http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10520&cs_id=1052001&p_id=5761&seq=1&format=

Lowe's had a 30% failure rate and I have yet to have the first one break from MonoPrice. Have also bought various lengths of ethernet from them with all different colors. Santas Helper
I guess it depends on the batch and how they were stored for any place you buy them from.I had great luck with Lowe's and the opposite from Harbor Freight while others was totally opposite of my experience. It's just a crap shoot

But yes, they are pricey.
Rick Childers
Lowes was selleing a 100 pack of the 4" ties for about $3, so it would have been $30 for a 1000. I was able to run by Northern Tool, and got 2000 for $16 . That should hold me for a few weeks
JBullard
What everyone is missing is how the zip ties are rated. Some zip ties have a larger tensile strength then others. The correctly rated tensile strength has to be chosen for the application. That is why some zip ties will break when you "snug" them up, if you are exceeding the tensile strength rating of the tie.Just like electrical wire, use 18 AWG where you should be using 12 AWG, then the 18 AWG wire will "break"

The sad thing was (the ones I got from Harbor Freight) I was snugging up the ties with my fingers, not even tight yet and many broke.I go for ones with 18lb strength for 4" ties, but that doesn't mean they still hold that after being in hot or long storage which changes the strength of plastic/PVC over time. Again, I was just senching down before they get tight and "snap".
scubado
The color ones at Harbour Freight are junk. I won't buy ties there again, so I don't know if the black or white ones there are any good.
