Ok, now i have to have one to call my own. the confusing part is how many channels to use. Looks to be 16 for the mega tree portion but how many for the "wrap around"? Also the star looks to be two channel instead of one. how many channels do i need to get that effect?

depends on soooo many factors...

height, colors, etc.

Mine was 20 foot tall (until it broke in half Thanksgiving Night), with 4 colors per string (individually controlled) and I had 24 strings...so 96 channels...

Mr. Weber used Multi Colored strings, so I beleive he only had 16 channels..one channel per string...

here is how he did it:

and here is a spreadsheet to help calculate your tree:

Here's another look at a 16 channel Weber tree. I only had a total of 32 channels last year. That really made the Weber tree the star of the show. Each of my 16 Weber tree channels controlled one white string of minis (m6) and one multi-colored string (C6). 32 total strings each about 33 ft long on a 20 foot tree. Not bad for a first year. I am looking forward to adding more channels for 2011.

At great risk of sounding like a "LOR Retard" it looks like for your display you took the basic logic behind the Mega tree BUT used 16 guide wires for support and wrapped 16 channels of lights around that. is that correct? how did you do the star? different sizes within each other?

You are correct on the Weber tree construction elements. I didn't start until October last year so the 3-D star was purchased as a kit from Daryl at Christmas Light Show. Here's the link...

what lights do you think were used on the tree, would led's be an option or not bright enough. keep hearing that the LED's have to be "waveable", what does that mean and where do i find those assuming they aren't standard.

LED's are plenty brite.....The "Waveable" you ask about are either half-wave or full wave rectified. american standards for 120 volts are 60 cycles a second "Picture a wave rippling 60 times a second" cut the wave in half ...1/2 wave. Full wave rectfied LED's dimm better without a slight flickering effect as half waves have a tendency to do. I've seen some effects that half wave actually look better on. As far as rectified goes...LED's are direct current "DC" powered. Utiliziing a bridge rectifier(a series of diodes forcing the alternating current) to go in one direction ...hence DC. More people on this site can get very technical on the subject..Just trying to give you the basics..hope it helps.
