Hooking up cat5 cables

Do you have to hook the cat5 cable to controller #1 to control 13 controllers?Or can i hook up from unit 13.I have the mp3 director.Unit 13 is also a 1602 controller.It would save me from using a 75-100 foot cat5 cable.I would only need about a 20 foot cable.The joys of being in your rookie year.
