Rainbow floods and power supplies

Recommended Posts

So I decided to jump on the rainbow flood wagon today.
I went to order 7, but they only had 3 left in stock. Sorry for taking the last ones...

I also need to order a CMB16D-QC, but I will wait until they come into stock.

My question is what power supply would you guys recommend?
And, is there a limit to how long the Cat5 cables can be to run to each of the floods?

Some floods will be tied together onto one Cat5 cable, Some others will be on their own cable.

I am having pretty good luck running the floods. at least 2 of them, from a laptop type power supply i got on Ebay. Havnt gotten my 2nd DC board and the first one I bought is running great on a desktop power supply conversion but I dont think I will have trouble running 2 floods maybe 3 on a 4 amp laptop supply.

Well, I have a bench power supply for testing, but I also have an old computer power supply I could try. I'm not sure how reliable it is though.

I was wondering about laptop PSU's if those would work.
I plan on running 7 total, so that might be too much for one of those though.

I would assume a 12v wall transformer would not work right?

A new order of floods was place at the beginning of this week. They will be here in 2 weeks. For those of you that ordered, something was wrong with the tracking system in the store front, so it let you place an order without sending you an "Out of Stock" email. I have sent those of you an email...sorry about that. I will get them to you as soon as I can.

Also, for power supplies, I also recommend this...

This will power close to 12 floods very easily. I have a bunch of these I use in my display as well as a bench type power supply. They work great.

I bought a small laptop replacement power supply at the local electronics store. It's more efficient than a PC power supply because it only has one output, which means it's smaller and runs cooler. Its voltage is selectable with a switch (because it's sold as a replacement power supply for a large number of laptops that take different voltages), and one position is 12 volts.

I haven't yet tried powering all 5 Rainbow Floods at the same time, but I'll let you know.

I ordered a couple of these on Greg's recommendation, one for the 5 floods I got as well as the D.C. board and one for a spare. Worked great on the 4th. Ran 5 hours in the FL heat without a problem.

Another place to get power supplies is http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/701799/209855560-289599951/350W-Dual-Output-Switching-Power-Supply-88-264VAC-input-12V-350W-output-CE-and-ROHS-approved.html

350 watts 12vdc so more than twice the output for a cheaper price, get more than 1 and you save on shipping. This is what im using and have 5 of them and im happy
At that price you can afford to have a spare

I ordered three of these from Ali Express on Aug 7.

When I check my order status I see

The supplier is processing your order

Have been in online chat with Ray Wu (Ali Express) twice, requesting shipping information. The reply is always "Shipped Yesterday, I send tracking info tomorrow"

Just now - same status, and have yet to receive tracking info.

Great prices, IF you can get the merchandise!

I'm close to canceling the order and requesting a refund through paypal.

Edit: I also have the 12.5 amp unit Greg referenced. Great power supply

Sorry to hear that, there must be a reason behind it. Over at auschristmaslighting forums a lot of the guys have used Ray with excellent service and speedy delivery. I know for me my power supplies took 6 days from purchase to being delivered in Australia and we have had nothing but great service from Ray.

Yes, That's where I got the link.

Tonight I asked Ray again whenmy order would ship. He replied two days ago.

I then asked for a tracking number. He replied with a number and I confirmed it was via DHL. DHL has no info on the number I was given.

Got Ray in chat again. Mentioned the DHL thing.

He replied, "I know"

Asked him how I was supposed to track the order. He replied he would get back to me tomorrow.

My order status page still shows:

The supplier is processing your order

not as shiped.

(Maybe Ray likes the Aussies better then the Yanks?) lol

Either way if you payed by paypal via escrow you have 2 levels of buyer protection. What i do know is that Ray doesnt hold the goods himself he is the middle man between the manufactures and the buyer so he may have had issues with the supplier. Sorry to hear of your bad experience, im sure all will be good in the end either way.

Oh, I'm sure it will all work out OK.

I've always heard he was a straight up guy.

He has lot's of other goodies I would like to order, but I want to see this order shipped first!

I went with this supply..will be doing on the order of 6-8 RFs...plus some other DC stuff...likely just one DC card.

http://cgi.ebay.com/DC-12V-20A-Regulated-Switching-Power-Supply-AC-110-240V-/110545679838?pt=Laptop_Adapters_Chargers

They have various size supplies...price and size was right for what I needed. Delivery was quick, so I can recommend them...

Guys, you can get power supplies usually for free. Just look or ask around to computer nuts you know. I'm sure they have an old computer just sitting around that could be stripped of it's power supply. If I remember right, all you have to do to enable them is connect the green wire on the big connector that goes to the motherboard to a black/ground wire. I'll be using one supply to run 1500 led's plus some high powered ones, not all will be on at the same time of course.
Since this discussion is also on Rainbow floods, here are pics of the RGB floods that I made using 10W 12V led's.
