Shorten sequence or cutting parts out

The short answer is that you can use "Change Total Time" from the Sequence Editor's Edit menu. The long answer has two additional caveats:

First, "Change Total Time" will simply lop off the end of the sequence (if you specify a shorter time). For example, if your sequence is three minutes long, and you change it to 2:30, then the first 2:30 of your sequence will remain unchanged, and the last 0:30 will be gone.

So, if you want to remove time from anywhere besides the end of the sequence, you should first cut and paste events so as to get everything that you want to keep into the front of the sequence.

Second, if you're using a musical sequence, you should also use an audio editor to change the total time of the song file as well. In fact, in this case, it might be best to simply create a new sequence based on the newly edited song file, importing the channel config from the old sequence and then copying and pasting effects from the old to the new.

Here is a video showing how to copy and paste. Cutting and pasting is the same, except you use the Cut button instead of the Copy button (the Cut button looks like a pair of scissors).

The video shows copying and pasting between two different sequences, but there's no reason you can't do it within a single sequence.

There are also different ways to cut other than the Cut toolbar button. They all have the same effect, so whichever you find most convenient is best:
  • Press the Cut toolbar button, or
  • Hold down the Ctrl key and hit the X key, or
  • Right click on the grid, and select "Cut" from the popup menu, or
  • Open the Edit menu, and select "Cut" from it.

Similarly, copying and pasting can be done in several ways. The keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl-C for copy, and Ctrl-V for paste; the other ways are similar to those described above for cutting.

Are you using Audacity to shorten the song? I have had success with the full song, shorten the song using Audacity, then save a new copy with the shortened media file and then copy the last part of the song you used from the full length version and mark the time. From there, when you shorten the total time like Bob said, you can paste the ending section...just an option.
