bhays
Don't get me wrong, I like LED's. I just can't justify the price. However, when I see the colors I am reminded of playing Leisure Suite Larry back in the early 80's on my IBM XT with CGA Graphics.Just sayin.... -klb-
I've never thought that of the Minleon retrofits, nor the Sun Tzen sealed C6 strings. But the big box ones, especially the multi color strings just don't look right to me.
Tim Fischer
The colors I use of Paul/Travis' LED's (blue/red/green/yellow/pure white) are much more bright then the pastels in that pic you have there. I was an Apple II guy back in the CGA days so I don't have a lot of CGA memories to draw off of
NWSanta
Well I'll admit they have a "Different" glow to them that's really starting to grow on me. They certainly don't have the warm feel that Old School C9's do but, the energy savings is amazing....I find that a lot of the strands that are sold around here just have too much Red/orange/yellow in them and they look more like halloween lights than christmas lights, I actually went Red/blue/green/yellow/white this year and i'm pretty happy with the way it looks....-Evan
froop
I hate to be a pedant here, but that's a screen shot of Alley Cat, not Leisure Suit Larry!
Nova5
One day the enviro weenies will make incandescent lights illegal. ccfls and leds will become standard.
GaryMartin
Okay Senior Hayes, take a look at our display and tell me if you think it looks like Leisure Suit Larry http://www.vimeo.com/8276118The arches use FireFly LED RGB strands, as well as the megatree star and the superstar over the front door. The Snowmen have LED RGB floods (DIY- Frank Kostyun's Mighty Mini floods) in them. Everything on the garage, it's star and "rays" are Creative Display LEDs.Loads of LEDs, no polyester suits! ;>

I am adding some ccr's for next year myself. In the video, those colors look much less cartoonish than most I have seen. Don't get me wrong, if I could economically go to LED I would probably do it. George Simmons
I'm guessing that humans were having discussions just like this one 600 years ago. Except back then it was about whether the world was round or flat...And yes, unless we curb the liberal tree-hugging weenies (either at the voting booth or via a solid metal jacket) it won't matter whether someone likes LED's or the antique incandescents - the discussion will be over. bhays
That's fine. Just institute a trade subsidy (we owe China too much to calculate anyway) to bring them down to the pricing of mini's and I will go all LED, hug a tree and sing Kum Bi Ya right along with ya! Brad
I know its personal choice but, I have a hard time focusing on some of the LED lights like blue and red. They just look like a picture that is out of focus. Other colors like green, yellow, and white are fine. I figure if I have a hard time with it, some visitors might as well so, I limited my use of them. And if I’m forced to go LED, they will be carrying me away on a stretcher while I tell the world, “LED lights are people”.

And the commercial-quality LED's like Paul's and Travis', I don't notice it at all.I think the "out of focus" might really be "half-wave flicker"
Robin
The Cap and Trade Bill that passed the house would eliminate mini lights. I forget the year but soon the CFL will be the only bulb you will be able to buy for your house. So when you hear about it, might want to go out and purchase all you can because they will be gold on resale!
Nova5
the GE LEDs i have have a blue plastic C6 bulb body encasing the LED. Very pretty blue. but every strand of the LEDs has the halfwave flicker.
Nova5
2014 is the end of life for 40watt+ incandescents. light strings may or may not die later on.http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59298
csf
Truly I really hope they change this. I really am not a fan of non indecent lighting for most things.I have tried them, the light is not as direct, take a while to turn on, and just don't look as nice. Also they may use less power but can have other negative effects on the environment. Here is the best way for people to save energy, don't turn on lights your don't need on.We really have to watch our whole go green idea does not cause more problems down the road. Just like Solar panels sound great, but we really don't know what to do with them when they go bad cause of the stuff most of them are made out of.I have heard that the batteries from hybrid cars cause more environment harm then the car does good.I can't say I am an expert on going green, but I know enough to say we should proceed with caution. The devil is in the detail. Saving the earth is a good thing, proceeding stupidly, will just mess things up more.
Nova5
ccfls can't be cold. they won't work until and If they can warm up the transformer. So wintertime use outside = No. LED's don't face the same problem, they can turn on in nearly any temp.CCFLs have nasty mercury. Limited dropoffs for them = People throw them in the trash. Poisoned environment.LEDs don't have any nasties in them to require special disposal.
Steven
Here's an AP article about LED vs. incandescent: Many take dim view of new-fangled Christmas lights"When you're finding shards of purple glass in the summer when you mow the grass, you can remember the fun you had at Christmas." Dad02
LED's have a long way to go before the have a natural warm look to them but work great for strobes. Hopefully the technology will change by 2014. For me the mini's work just fine and are cheap enough to do whatever you want.
