Lighted Candy canes burning out

I purchased the Home Depot candy canes in the 3 pack. According to my brother in law who is an electrician, says they were wired in series. These worked great for about 15 minutes, one by one they all burnt out. Now I purchased the ones from Lowes in the 5 pack, these are supposedly wired in parrallel. I have lost 3 of the 7 I had but 4 are still working. I hardwired all of them individually with 14-2 romex and wire nutted at the connection. Anyone else having candy cane issues? I'm burnt out on them.:(

You wired each candy cane with 14/2 romex! That's a tad bit overkill. These draw such little power you could probably used burned out strings of mini-lights.

Might want to try Wally World's individual canes. That's what I use without problem.

That's funny. My wife says I'm the only person she has ever heard use the term "tad bit". She says it has no meaning since a tad and a bit are already so small.

I second that recommendation. In addition to using them as candy canes, I used them for the spokes of a pinwheel and they work great! Can't beat the price either - I got mine for like 40 cents each after Christmas last year.

How do you have them wired? I used romex because it was free. Probably going to use SPT-2 next year on them.

I use almost all SPT-1. It stores much easier.

Again I find myself seconding Dave's recommendation. I completely understand the lure of the word 'free' but I've got almost two miles of extension cords - Holy Cow - I can't even imagine how big that pile of copper would be using 14/2 romex...

Regardless of the wire I use the lights only draw so much current. The wire used should not affect the light in a way to burn it out. When it comes to packing my equipment I can post another forum about my frustrations with the amount of romex I have to store, until then I am trying to figure out WHY MY CANES ARE BURNING OUT!!

I had a 50-bulb string of minis I used for the star on top of my tree. Unlike other strings I have used for years, this one burned out several bulbs in just one season. I knew at that rate the current would rise quickly and burn out the whole string, so I just trashed the whole thing and switched to a 50-bulb string of LED's. Problem solved.

If you plan to continue using your candy canes for years, it may be worth it to pull out the whole string and stuff the cane with a new LED string.

maybe change the sequence to use a short ramp instead of a direct on? I remember years ago there were certain mini light sets that stated to be steady burning only...

not sure why but perhaos the bulbs are not designed for the inrush current when turned on and off

I purchased 5 of the 5 candy cane sets from Lowes and split them into single canes, (all are mini light not led) and attached plugs to the idividual canes. they have been working fine for a week now (5 hours a night). All were wired in series and it was easy to split them apart.
