DavidGrant Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 is ther any other adapter that can be used instead of the USB 485?I am waiting for my new adapter to arrive. But in the meantime is there anything else I can use?many ThanksDavid grant
-klb- Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Not really.. Some other RS-485 adapters might work, but are not supported. Reportedly, there is a way to pin out an adapter from a serial port, but you loose any 2 way functionality (setting unit ID, interactive displays, polling controllers from the hardware utility) and you are potentially sending 12 V from the serial port to an interface that is designed for 3V, with possible unwanted consequences.
eldoradoboy Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 if your computer has a serial port you can often find serial rs232 to rs485 adapters at places that sell industrial test or PLC equipment.....-Christopher
James George Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Sounds like you will be using the USB adapter (when it arrives) and not a serial port. I don't have a serial port on my computer so I use a USB to serial adapter and plug the RS-485 adapter in the serial end. Then plug in the cat5E cable and connect to my controller. I have had no problems. I got the LOR RS-485 with my controller but got the USB to serial adapter from Staples or Office Depot. Works great for me.
