BryanLeggo
I'm looking for an FM Transmitter for an outdoors Xmas display. On the low end I see things like the "Whole House Transmitter" that has a range of 150 feet. On the high-end I see transmitters that can get quite exepnsive but might cover 1/4 mile.First is 150 feet enough for most of you? Secondly, what about the issue of how tough the transmitter is in freezing weather? Or do you transmit through the glass of a window and keep the transmitter indoors? What do you folks use? iresq
You need to define quite expensive...At the budget end is a modified Belkin. This can be done for < $20. I was able to get 100' with mine but the sound quality was crap.I am currently using the EDM LCD unit < $200. Easy to assemble, could easily broadcast over a mile but I would not recommend that.Ramsey get's good reviews as does mobileblackbox. Wholehouse get's mixed reviews and has a limited number of frequencies. Is 150' enough? That is going to depend on your display and the distance of your transmitter/antenna to the street. I get 2 full blocks on either side of my house. I am using a ground plane antenna about a foot off the ground. If I elevated the antenna, the distance would be much greater. Some people broadcast Christmas music 24/7, so they are probably looking for maximum coverage. My transmitter is inside with my antenna outside. When I used a Belkin, it was outside. Many people have their transmitters and antenna on the inside. In fact, when I first set up my EDM, I just tapped the test antenna to the window in my office. The range was pretty good. I think most transmitters will brave the cold but not extreme cold temps. Water is a factor, the unit should be kept in a weatherproof container. Cheaper FM transmitters can have freq. drift as a result of temperature changes. Getting a transmitter with PLL (phase lock loop) will prevent this from happening.
