Good morning

I use the LOR rs232 to sc485 adapter (LOR description sc485 to rj45)

http://store.lightorama.com/scseco.html

and the Radio Shack usb to rs232 adapter cable

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3120513

The software that comes with the cable is very specific as to the order that

installation is completed.

Do not plug cable into computer

Run software on computer - not an automatic install

Plug cable into an unused usb port -- LOR adapter not plugged into cable

Vista will automatically detect cable and install cable software

Insert LOR adapter - make sure the cat5 cable is plugged into

both the adapter and the LOR controller

run the hardware utility - auto configure comm port

My Vista software immediately found the LOR network

-- for me it was comm 5 - that is dependant on usb

port assignments within vista

Refresh for found controllers

All control was possible after this --- just did this last night

Much of the problem has to do with Microsoft trying to force newer operating systems onto people who are not ready for them. Windows XP may work for several more years with some people and their hardware. Just how many times do we need to keep upgrading our equipment in order to keep up? This is getting just plain ridiculous and over-complicated. What was wrong with the older platforms? The newer platforms have so much junkware in them.

We're starting to get off topic, but how long should Microsoft be expected to support and patch an OS, and software companies make sure that new versions of their software work? 98 is 10 years old after all. But 2.6.0 does have 98 listed as the minimum requirement so it should work. There were no service packs for it, and I can't think of anything in particular that would be in a patch that LOR would need, maybe something with media player?

Heck, you think Microsoft is bad, try Apple. They switch entire architectures :D

However, the point of my post was to highlight the rudeness of the thread header in a forum where there are young adults and people's Grandma's and Grandpa's regularly reading and contributing. Not to discuss the value of Microsoft's OS improvements. That's another thread altogether. Start it if you like, I'd love to participate. I can type and type and type. I have this really stable, rock solid OS called Vista that keeps me from having any problems with my computer.

As for the suggestion regarding "Apple" you obviously forgot the first two letters of that name... "C" and "R" Were you aware that it's also a synonym for three separate words: "useless" "simple" and "meaningless?"

Jeff
Since I think I was the only one to mention Apple, I'm not sure what you're referring to. Lonewolvie said that Microsoft basically makes you buy a new computer for new OS's. I was simply saying that while old computers might not run new versions of Windows as well (though 7 runs better on older equipment than Vista), Apple REALLY makes changes. Try installing Snow Leopard on a iMac G5 from 2005. It won't be slow, it won't even install. No support for that type of processor anymore. And more programs will require Snow Leopard+.
