taybrynn
FYII'm just posting this here, since I know a lot of the newbies might be needing a good transmitter for their 2009 shows. You can research the forums, but the EDM LCD is a great transmitter and even offers a RDS model which can transmit text from LOR if you want. I hosted a bunch of group buys in these in 2008, and this will be my only one for 2009, since I've been ill and basically busy with other things. It is a kit, but only basic soldering and assembly skills are required. Can you solder a couple power leads, insert an IC chip and assemble/dis-assemble the case? If so, this can be done in 15-20 minutes easily.Ok, here is the pre-order page for the final EDM group buy for 2009.If you interested, you must get on the pre-order list PRIOR to this weekend.Details are on the pre-order form.http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dEYzc2UwOEo3YWpsTDI4cXl3T2hwUUE6MAProvided we get at least 10 pre-order(s) placed, the sale link will be emailed out Saturday, and orders should be placed Saturday or Sunday (next weekend).Cheers,Scott / taybrynn
iresq
Thanks Scott. Sorry to hear you are ill. I added my order to your speadsheet. There is another group buy going on but it's only for the RDS unit.

Rafter Bar R
How good are these units for sound qualtiy and range?
iresq
These units have very good sound quality and transmission. Just do a quick search on here and PC. In just one season, EDM appears to become the defacto transmitter in this hobby. Even Ramsey owners have sung the praise of EDM.Now hurry up and pre-order, we need one more. Richard Hamilton
taybrynn,I'm trying to help a family member set up a show for this Christmas and he wants an RDS unit.It seems that after looking at many threads of owners over the last year, the EDM unit is well received. Gee, I wouldn't bet on that by looking at their web site. It is the most amatuer, unprofessional crud that I've ever seen. It doesn't give me great confidence! If their transmitter design is as bad as the site, we are in trouble.Ok, so my real question is that I can't determine anything from their site as to whether this transmitter comes with a case to put it in after it is built, and what type of antenna connector it has. Can anyone answer that on this forum?I think I've have him sign up on the forum and order it for himself. I'm a bit afraid he won't like it if I get it for him. You know relatives :-)
cmoore60
Richard,http://www.edmdesign.com/orders.htmlTakes you directly to the order page. The transmitter is well made. The antenna conncetor is an RCA jack.Feel free to ask other questions. I have the LCD version and am quite happy with the sound produced.Chuck
Richard Hamilton
Chuck,Thanks for the link and the comments. Interestingly, when I was on their web page earlier this evening, the "order" link was not working and there was nothing to be seen. With your link, I can see more about how it is built.Glad to hear you like the unit!
cmoore60
Basically there was some discussion about their website. They do keep it pretty simple to allow for faster download faster. Keep in mind that EDM is in south Africa and not all countries have high speed internet.Basically to get to the orders page you start by hovering over the display thing at the top of the screen.Chuck
taybrynn
Yes, a lot of people have complained about the low tech web site. The stuff sold through these groups buys includes the transmitter, metal enclosure (not plastic) and power supply. What you don't get is the cord to connect the audio from the PC to the transmitter. Normally thats just a simple 1/8" (mini headphone male) to stereo (R&L) RCA male cord. Online you can find them for $2-$4 ... at the local store maybe $4-$8.You also don't get a printed manual ... but they should email you the PDF manual (when you order), or can send it to you upon request. The manual is very basic, simple ... don't expect any glossy orfancy ... its just a "heres how to put it together", and "heres how to operate it". Not much else. Thats it.The support is excellent and I reccomend joining the yahoo EDM group if you are an owner. They also come with a "test antenna", which is just a 1 meter tiny wire with an RCA male connector on one end. Its crude, nothing special ... but works fairly well for most. That said, many buy a nice antenna, but it is usually not necessary unless you live on acres or just have to have the best to sleep at night.Despite the lousy web site ... the transmitter is as GOOD as the web site is BAD. So in other words, really good.

For what you get, the price seems very competitive. The specs look very good on these units too. Everywhere I Googled, people seem to love these things. It also appeared that there is a California affiliate of some sort, so I was guessing that they might be shipped from there?Yes, I understand the comments about them being in South Africa so maybe they don't have high speed internet, but my issues with their site are more basic than than. Actually, the design of their site makes the pages download slower, not faster, so if download speed was their intent, then they failed miserably ;-)I think they just don't know how to put a decent site up there because there are lots of amatuer mistake. Example, some color combinations of text/background are not readable by 8% of all males. I'm one of them. I had to get my son in here to read the pages to me! Other things like an impossible to locate menu (chuck found it, I didn't), and 135 html errors on the main web page were listed in my page evaluator.Oh well, I finally concluded by seeing the comments of trusted people on this site that the transmitters are well liked and I should forget about the look of the site... although honestly, I think they would sell a lot more transmitters with just a little work on that thing :-)much thanks taybrynn and chuck for your "hand-holding" ;-)
