Taking the plunge/ just starting

I have always had a nice set-up and people have enjoyed it. Last year I used the one that plays music and has 6 plugs into it to operate lights. I just joined the forum and have been montering this sight for about a year. You guys have a ton of knowledge and exsperiance., your set-ups are fantastic. Now I want to join in on the fun, but reading all this about LOR has had an overwelming effect. I am hands on and organized, but by no means a computor programmer. Where do you start?

1.Best place to purchase the latest and greatest LOR? Not ready to drop a grand in this yet.

2.How easy is it to set-up?

3. I downloaded the program , but right now it is jibberish to me untill I have my hands on the hardeware to understand how this works. Now when I get this am I going to have a tough way to go or will it come together and make sense?

4. Thank you so much for those who would like to help this NEWBBIE:)

Welcome Mike,

My first thought is that unless you go full-steam ahead on this and spend a lot of hours experimenting and learning, it might be too late in the season to get things going the way you want this year. You are on the borderline timewise.

I think it could help if you give a bit of information on your skill level. Example, are you an experienced computer user? Know much about technical electrical things? Can you out-run your wife? :D

I agree that it is kind of late to think about dropping whole hog into LOR at this time if you are going to try to animate your whole house. But if you get like one or two controllers and just do a small megatree or a line of arches, that would still be quite doable.

I find each different element you add to your display multiplies the time you spend sequencing.

If you have the demo software and download a few sample sequences from lorsequences.com, it can give you a pretty good idea of how things work.

There are some knit picky details that you have to work through to get the display up and running, but keeping it small the first year is good for the learning curve without becoming overwhelmed.

We are always here to answer questions. Even the ones we get asked 20 times a year. :D

Oh....I guess I should attack your questions.

Definitely direct from LOR. I would suggest a starter Kit with a 16 channel box.

2.How easy is it to set-up?

It isn't rocket science, but does take planning. Mapping out your display and the channels is a must.

3. I downloaded the program , but right now it is jibberish to me untill I have my hands on the hardeware to understand how this works. Now when I get this am I going to have a tough way to go or will it come together and make sense?

Like I said above, download a couple sequences. Remember, the music files are seperate from the sequence file.

4. Thank you so much for those who would like to help this NEWBBIE:)

You're welcome

I too think you are running out of time for this year.
Play with the software and if you get a few songs done buy the controllers.
This is my first year. I downloaded the software and started sequencing in March.
I still have a lot to do before Dec.
If you liked the 6 channel GE then you will LOVE LOR!

Mike,

Last year was my first with LOR. I did not have enough time for sequencing so I got a sequence package from WowLights. They also have packages including the controller, SW, sequences, etc. They include multiple channel count versions of each sequence- 16, 32, 48, or 64 channels. This would be a fast start approach that would allow you do do something this year.

Mike, welcome & you have already taken the most important step IMHO by asking for the advice of these great people on this forum. My suggestion is to start small just to get the hang of it then once you feel confident, & you will, then plan you next season with time on your side. You can get many sequences at http://www.lightoramasequences.com that will get you started. Good luck.

Standard advice for a Newbie....

Start shopping for extension cords. ;)

Cheaper to just buy 1000 ft rolls of SPT and Vamipre plugs and sockets and have all custom length cords, in my opinion
