iresq Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 I recently updated to 2.4.8. Now when I try to play a sequence or start a new one, I get the following:Component 'wmp.dll' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.I ran an update scan for WMP 11 (cumulative update), says no update needed.Any ideas?
Richard Hamilton Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 iresq, I recall seeing many other posts about this last year so you might do a quick search. I'd suggest just re-installing the Windows Media Player anyway. That solved the problem for me on an old garage computer I was using... even though Windows reported no update was needed.
iresq Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Thanks Richard. I tried some searches but you know how well this board's search function is. I tried to reinstall WMP but I get a message saying I have the most up to date version. I am researching how to uninstall WMP.
Guest wbottomley Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 Add/remove programs in the control panel.
iresq Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 I am running Vista. It appears that WMP cannot be uninstalled as it is embedded in the OS? Is this correct?
iresq Posted September 27, 2009 Author Posted September 27, 2009 Reloaded LOR, same issue. And I just received a different error, Error During child State Change - Object variable or With block variable not set.I need to walk away from this as my blood pressure is starting to rise.
Richard Hamilton Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 iresq,Gee, I am getting too old for this. I stupidly realized that the place where I remember talking about this was on my own board at beginning of the year... duh !!! :?Several things come to mind.Right, WMP is so heavily inter-mingled with new versions of MSIE and other tools that you can't really uninstall it from Windows as a separate application. Thank you Bill !!!However; there is a way to remove "updates" in the control panel because technically WMP is an update to Windows. You aren't seeing WMP in the control panel because you probably have that viewing option turned off by default. In Vista, there is a link in the left panel that reads "Vista installed Updates." On other versions of Windows it is a checkbox named "View Updates" on the in the top of the control panel. By turning this on, you are going to see a long list of updates. My disclaimer. Personally, I would uninstall an update only as a last resort and even before doing that, I backup my complete computer. "Acronis TrueImage" is my favorite tool for that. Sometimes, I have been able to uninstall an update then Windows will see it missing and offer to update it again went going to "Windows Update". Newly corrected versions of the files will then get installed. Please see the link on my site about this topic. There are two links to Microsoft updates that seem to have worked for 3 other people that I know about. It looks like you are already registered on my site, but if you or others can't see this link, let me know and I will go grab the full text and come back to post it here so people don't have to register.http://magiclightshow.com/bb/index.php?topic=100.0PS. your new discovery of '"Object variable or With block variable not set" was not a waste of your time. It is a very KEY piece of information to me and I'm real familiar with that error. It usually means the wmp object was not able to be loaded properly because one of the dependencies is not matched with the same version number, or that the wmp object is not registered properly.
iresq Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 The first link fixed the problem.Thank youThank youThank youDave
Richard Hamilton Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 iresq wrote: The first link fixed the problem.Thank youThank youThank youDaveWonderful ! now go fight some real fires I was expecting it to work because 75% of the time the problem is due to a registry mishap. Registy entries normally are messed up due to a newly installed application trying to register WMP, and the programmer of the installer likely copied an incomplete set of WMP support files. This issue may or may not have been caused by an LOR installation because I have not looked closely at what the installation tries to copy and register. I'm guessing LOR did not cause this problem and it may have been another multimedia application that screwed it up. It is my understanding that LOR just references an already installed Windows Media Player and does not redistribute the package. LOR boys will know the answer to this.
