NC Triangle area coffee time

Al in Raleigh

Recommended Posts

Before Christmas several of the NC Triangle area folks got together at Starbuck's for coffee and conversation. It is past time to to do it again. I am open for suggestions for places and times, however, may I suggest July 25 at Starbuck's Lake Boone for a small group or at my church's fellowship hall for a more befitting larger group. What you might not know is that William Bottomley has given the NC folks a forum all for us. It is called CarolinaChristmas.com Thank you William. I am overwhelmed with how many people in the Raleigh area have displays. What is amazing is the number of people in NC that have displays. Lets have coffee and learn about each other.

I am open for suggestions.

Even better than that Al, I'm converting PHPBB to VBulletin. This site will be the most robust forum I've ever put together.

So far, I've installed 15 modifications. For example, online radio/tv media player, ultimate media gallery, web templates for other information, countdown clocks, automatic birthday greeter, and be able to embed youtube videos directly on the forum.

Hi. My name is Denny Cole and I am starting my first LOR display for this year. 64 channels on the house/decorations plus a 32 Channel Mega-tree. I have TONS of questions. For example, I want to use LED lights but every company I have asked says their LED lights cannot be dimmed .. etc etc etc

Don Williams at Lake Myra (600-plus channels) has also started to organize a local LOR group, but I like the idea of something in Raleigh. Don is very hard to contact and has not answered any of my emails for over a month.

Thanks !

Denny

Hi Denny,

I just PMed you directly. I too prefer having something in Raleigh. I know of several people inside the city limits with displays. I know of several in Cary, Holly Springs, and Garner.

Does the date I picked work for you?

I will try my best to make this July 25th meeting a priority. I did not see a suggested time.

I am not a big fan of Saturday meetings because the family is always doing something. Most of my Saturdays are booked through September but as luck would have it, we're only going to be at Jordan lake that day .. so I can drive back up to Raleigh for this meeting.

I think the best time to get a lot of participants for routine meetings might be either a week-night or a Sunday evening. Even people who travel for a living might be able to give up a couple hours on a Sunday evening. I was gonna say "guys" but there just might be some lady participants. I would even like to get my wife interested so knowing there would be other wives might help that along.

It would be neat to meet a couple times per month to share ideas, etc.

I need to build my first Mega-Tree (have 32 channels for it). So getting some group discussion might help me avoid mistakes that would eat up extra time. .... Hmmm ... Speaking of time .. This LOR stuff looks like it's gonaa eat up some serious time ! But I am driven to providing my neighborhood with their first serious traffic jam this Christmas .. :-)

Hi Tom and Denny,

The time hasn't been finalized but it should be around noon. Depending on the amount of people that plan to come we may hold it in my church's fellowship hall. There isn't a good day for a meeting only days less bad than others. Let's try a Saturday. If it doesn't work with the group we can switch it. Maybe do a weekday dinner meeting or something. This is our get together. We can structure it however we want.

Al,

I think I will probably be able to make this meeting. Please remind me though. With my kids playing ball and traveling for work I tend to forget a lot of things. I am so far behind what I wanted to do for my display this year. Maybe this meeting will get me off my rear. My wife wants me to go bigger this year but I am just not sure that I have time to program for it. I am hoping I will find some time though.

Al,

Also I tried carolinachristmas.com and I didn't see a forum. I only saw things for a carolina christmas show at the convention center. Am I missing something?

Al -

Thanks for the correct web site there; I was also seeing the commercial site.

I want to come from Pittsboro, but depending on what time of day and whether or not my other commitment for that day gets changed again, my wife and I may not be able to make it.

It's my first year with LOR, but not my first year doing lights - http://www.PittsboroChristmas.com.

I'm looking forward to the get-together; I'm hoping I can learn from the experiences of others so I can avoid mistakes - such as keeping my megatree from falling over this year!

I'm in for July 25th. I have been doing heavy Christmas decorating for about 6 years on my house. This is my first LOR. After seeing all the comments on the difficulty of keeping mega trees in place .. I might just go with the cement tip ! The expensive $200 crank-up truss is also starting to look less expensive as I hear more about how hard it can be to lift the lights in place .. Maybe we can do a group buy and get a discount on the crink ups ? Can anyone comment on the quality of it ?

Thanks !

Denny Cole

I am sorry for giving out the wrong URL. ChristmasCarolina is hard to remember.

The get together will likely be a meet and greet. However, Walter and I will be building a megatree at his house this year. If it happens before the meeting, then we'll let everybody interested know or we will photograph the setup. Walter's will be black iron pipe with guy wires all inset into concrete. We plan to fabricate something like Darryl's crank up mechanism but more tailored to our needs. Walter and my megatrees will be very much similar.

Welcome Jack.

No big deal; I signed up for email notifications from the other place as well, even if it is a commercial site. My wife is looking forward to their show, even if it has nothing to do with our hobby. The show may have sources of materials, even if it's happening a bit late for planning purposes.

I inherited dyslexia from my wife; the web site isn't hard to remember, but web sites are up at both ChristmasCarolina.com (your site) and the other site where the two words are swapped (don't want to give any more of a free commercial than I already have)

Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Thanks Walter.

The info about the meeting was posted at ChristmasCarolina.com then the website's database crashed. Some of the posting were lost. Since the website was new there was not a recent backup. William worked for hours to reconstruct it on his birthday none the less. We appreciate all you do William. We owe you a birthday. Thanks to Carl too.

So, I hope to see as many of the locals as possible on July 25.
