Image Creating Advice

Hello all and Happy Thanksgiving,

As I sit here on this Thanksgiving day traditionally watching March of the Wooden Soldiers and patiently waiting for Football to start, I would like to create soldiers to add to my display but not exactly sure where to start. I am searching trying to create images but having no luck. 

Can anyone guide me to documentation or share any tips on where to begin.
