One thing I've never been quite sure of, since using S5 a couple of seasons ago and S6 last year: If I make a change to a preview, say a channel assignment or dimming curve, do I have to manually open and re-save all sequences? Or is LOR smart enough to recognize the change and re-render?

If I have to open and re-save, what's the best way to do this (e.g. any clever tricks)?

The show player is smart. When it "prepares" a show, it checks if the preview is a newer version, and if so, will re-render all the sequences used in that show (that it previously rendered with the old preview).

A new .loredit with a new preview will cause the preview to be updated when the show player prepares a show that includes that sequence.

Yes, to what Steven said. I'll add to it, the show player will re-compile "ALL" sequences associated with your selected show WHERE the preview changed, if you edited the sequence and saved it using the new preview. If you didn't edit a sequence with an older preview, it will leave the play file alone.

OK thanks to both of you for responding, but I'm still confused because you seem to be saying opposite things lol. Let me give you my scenario:

I have all my sequencing done, with the default preview set for everything. When doing testing, I found a couple channel and dimming curve issues that caused me to change the default preview to correct them.

Do I now need to go open all my sequences and re-save them? Or will the show player pick up this change? There's nothing in the actual sequence that changed, just the default preview that everything uses changed.

A preview change for dimming curve, universe/channel assignment doesn't require opening each sequence and resaving. If you do open them, they will get modified to embed the newer preview within the sequence. So you should be fine not having to update each sequence unless you want to.

If you change a group arrangement or a prop's shape/structure (pixel layout), I believe it should also get handled without opening sequences. But since the underlying pixel structure changed, the motion effects could look different. This can be both desirable or undesirable depending on the situation.

IF you haven't changed the NAME of the Preview and only updated the Preview that all of your sequences are assigned to, then the show player will re-compile all of the sequences and incorporate the change(s). Note that if you make a change with intent to allow the show player to make the update(s) the next time those sequences are played, there will be a lag in between as the player recompiles each sequences as it come up. I believe there is  a "batch" method to recompile all the sequences, but I've never used it. I created a simple show that has all of sequences and run it outside of the scheduled show time (with "control lights" turned off, so that there is no lag during the show.

Hope this helps.

Great- thanks all!

In the show builder/scheduler, it will automatically check the sequences to see if they require updating/recompiling. Click on the link there for doing just that, long before you are scheduled to start and it'll take care of itself

One of the changes from S5 to S6 is that now the show player recompiles ALL the sequences that need recompiling before the show starts, rather than doing it as each sequences comes up, as S5 did.
