Controller ID Configuration Confusion

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am not new to Light-O-Rama but I am new when it comes to working with the Pixie Controller. I took a dive into it this year. I have a Pixie16 controller. I am struggling trying to understand what DIP switches I need to set these to. If anyone knows what I should  set this to please share or if there is there a DIP switch for dummies book somewhere online.

Any help would greatly appreciated

In order to tell you what DIP Switch settings to use, we'd need to know what address you need/want the Pixie16 assigned to. What do you have it configured as in your Preview?

You can use any available Unit ID's, just keep in mind that the Pixie16 will use 16 of them, one for each port. You set the first ID either by the software or the dip switches and the the rest will be applied automatically in hex order. There is a Unit ID chart in the back of the Pixie manual starting on page 42, follow the chart to set the switches for the ID you wish to start with.

I always set my dip switches to all off on my pixies and let the HU set the value.  I have 21 pixies across 6 networks and have had zero problems.  Once the HU identifies the unit, you can then change the unit ID in the software, not the dip switches.  Let me knownif you need help.

Like Mr. P mentions, a Pixie16 will use 16 unit IDs.  Since I easily get lost using the hexadecimal system, I always set the base ID on the 10s.  For instance, the first pixie at 01, the second starting at 20, third on 30 and so on.  That will help avoid using the same ID twice.  Using an excel file to help track unit IDs is helpful as well.

you are off by 1 as the first only has 15 1-F vs 0-F

That is why I reserve  1-F for dumb controllers. 20,28,30,38,40,48 are for smart (some are Pixie 4 with 4 ID spare for future swap out :)

This is my first and only Pixie Controller. I found in some tutorials and what bbig has mentioned, that I can set the dip switches to the off position and things will be just fine. I found that to be true.

Thank you all for your replies. They are greatly appreciated for being the new kid on the block.
