Controller setup works to manualy turns lights on, but sequence will not??

With S6 Hardware controller setup I am able to find and manually control all of my devices, mostly CTB16D. however, when I use a preview file that was used for last year’s show,  create under S5 and try to create a new sequence I am unable to control anything. Using the “TEST LIGHTS “ Function with my existing preview  can not control anything??  I checked my Preview for all my devices and the settings do match what my device is actually connected to??  Not sure how to proceed?? Is it worth the time to start a completely new preview file??? Thank-you for any help or suggestions you throw my way.. Mike
