 Every time a show is played either scheduled or on demand, the sequence playback files are updated on the first pass through the show, as intended, however this happens every time a show is restarted, even though the sequence file have not been changed.

I tested this with a two sequence show, both short sequences, to expedite testing and the logs below show significant delays while the files are being processed even though no changes have been made to the sequences. The sequences tested were 30s and 1m40s long and not particularly complex. The delay on the longer one was in excess of 10 seconds.

This means that when a daily show starts, the first pass will have long delays while every song is updated, even though there is no need to update.

It will also update if the show file is changed causing a show player restart.

The effect also happens with “load all sequences first” checked, but it all happens up front.

Note that the second time through th show loop everything plays fine.

I ran my show on demand and came up with something a little different. On my editing pc, using the same .play files that were copied to the show pc. The editing pc re-processes the same songs even though no editing has been done. the same files on my laptop (show pc) are all processed and play instantly. Strange that 2 different pc's deal with the songs differently. As you can see from the timestamps, some of my songs take a lot longer then 10 seconds to process. Almost 2 minutes for Godzilla. Thats a long delay in the show.

1rst Run of Show on Demand with "Sequences are processed before they are played" This was done on my editing pc.
Note: The songs NEW 2019 Witch Doctor, New 2019 Godzilla show version, NEW 2019 Mr Bojangles, NEW 2019 War, NEW 2019 Wheel in the Sky, NEW 2019 Wonderful World all had to be processed. You will see on the second run 1 minute apart with no editing, the same songs are processed again.

This Log is from my laptop (Show PC) where I have moved all the .play files to. (The exact same files) I played the shows last night with no issues. No lag between songs. Show on Demand was set to proceess all songs before playing. As you see it did not have to re-process the same songs my editing pc did.

I should probably add that I do not use a dedicated show machine. Everything is done on my desktop, and the files are on a mapped network drive.

When you see "Processing S5 sequence" in the log, that means it is comparing time stamps on the LOREDIT file and the playback files. This will happen every time a show is started, and should not contribute to show delays.

When you see "Playback file updated", that is when the LOREDIT file was converted to an LMS/LAS and may take some time, depending on the length of the sequence, number of channels, and number of effects.

@PhilMassey I don't see any "Playback file updated" messages in your log. It looks like the delays are occurring when the compressed sequences are loaded from your file server -- which would need to happen every time the show is restarted.

@default I see the playback files getting created a second time in your 2nd log listing, which I will look into further. In your 3rd log listing, I'm wondering if the show files are the same -- looks to me like the show file on your show PC contains references to the playback files, not the LOREDIT files.

Matt. Just a little background 

Previously,  it was possible to keep the files on the server in  the LOR data structure, which kept everything  backed up, and allowed remote access via Dropbox.

I could, if required, copy the sequence files to a folder on the local drive and run them from there. The LCS files would create there, and all was good.

Now everything is forced to the LorInternal folder and plays from there which in my case is on the server.

I will take a look at Lorposting everything back to the local drive but it is a major move for me

Ok Subtopic here but related. Is LORPost still supposed to copy existing files from the current folder to the newly specified one. Seems like I remember it doing that. All I get is a structure of empty folders. I can copy everything by hand but................

Thanks, and I am also recreating these songs by creating a new song and copying the effects over. Since it only happens on certain songs (every time), this tells me something is amiss within those songs, be it a motion effect, preview issue, or a view issue. If I can track it down I will let you know. I almost certain this has more to do with my files, than S5 Sequencer.

Yes, this correct. The way I got things to work for me, is to setup Show Editor and run Show on Demand on my design pc. I then transfer the three playback files created for each song in the \Light-O-Rama\LORInternal\Playback\L directory, these would be the following files;
song.play.lms.lcs
song.lms.pe.lid
song.play.lms

I copy these files onto the show pc into the \Light-O-Rama\LORInternal\Playback\L directory. Then I run Show Editor on the show pc and select all the song.play.lms files from that directory. Every time I do it this way, I have zero problems. There is no lag between songs. If I make an edit on my design pc, I run it thru Show Editor, then Show on demand, then copy the new files to the show pc and all the changes show up as they should.

As a test last weekend I went thru the actual steps of copying ALL files listed in the File References, including pictures, movies, gifs, superstar .avi files etct to the show pc. The total amount of files copied was 992 for a grand total of 5gb of info. Even though I tried hard to account for every item listed in File References I still missed some, the show was disaster. There is no way I want to go thru that just to have a show. That's why I asked for an option to be able to create Playback files on the design pc, since all the files referenced are already there and no need for me to recreate them on another pc.

One other update. I find that there is a Change User Data Directory in the Sequencer Tools menu which executes Lorpost. This seems to be working and presumably is intended to replace the need for a manual execution.

Since I had already manually copied my data over, I cannot say whether it moves the data or even if it is intended to do so.

The Lorpost.exe will not run at all for me now.

Further testing on loading times with S5 show player.

I have relocated everything back to the local drive on my desktop in the users folder, and done some further testing.

Bear in mind this is all on a Rysen 2700X machine with 16 GB of ram and an M2 SSD, which is where all the  program files and the data files now reside, so should be just about best case.

The first test Show had compressed files and Load files as needed selected.

I first opened and re-saved each sequence loredit file so a rewrite would occur and ran the Show On Demand. As expected the first pass processed all the files and caused the expected ( but disliked ) delays.

The second pass (without stopping) played much better, BUT with 4 to 6 second delays on the smaller files and 8 to 12 seconds on the bigger ones. These are still NOT my largest files.

However in the past I have seen issues with memory de-caching with shows containing many sequences, (I have 50+), causing delays when “load all files before……… “  was in use and have avoided using it in favor of loading one at a time which has always been very quick once the compressed sequence was present.

I will run a large test show, loading all sequences first, but it will take some time.

As promised, I ran a test of a large show of 50 sequences.

I have, compared to some a modest show of about 8000 channels, or about 2600 pixels and as yet, zero motion effects and zero SuperStar effects.

Compressed Sequences is on and load all files first is checked in the show file.
Logs are attached as Dropbox links to keep the post more manageable.

Running a Show on Demand results in the creation of all playback file, LID files and the compressed sequence files as expected.

I saw a lot of decaching during this phase although this happened quickly.
The total time for the files to process was about 1 hour and 50 mins, at which time the show started playing. Admittedly this should be a one off event.

Allowing the show to play through without stopping I am seeing from 4 to 34 seconds delay between end of previous song and the start of the next depending on the size of the sequence.

Now, upon restarting the show again it attempts to load all the files first, but every few songs it has to decache to load some more. To load all 50 songs takes about 15 minutes before the show starts playing.

To Summarize playing a large show on demand using compressed sequences.

1)   Load files as needed.  4 to 30+ second delays between songs. Also seeing decaching which is new.

2 Load all files first. 1hr 50 minutes for first processing of files, and load. 15 minutes for processed files, Lots of decaching. Still 4 to 30+ seconds delay between songs.

I really hope I am doing something wrong, but I can’t see it.
This is now making me question my move to S5 as I cannot now go back unless I abandon all my changes for this year and play last years show unchanged  in S4

Since you have a good handle on benchmarking load times, etc. I 'm wondering if the way I do it would be helpful. Once the .play.lms.pe.lid, .play.lms.lcs, and the play.lms files are created in your directory, instead of pointing Show Editor to the .loredit files, point it to the play.lms files. Then run show on demand. At least in case it is much faster with no delays.

As I understand the process, Show on Demand is creating new playback files "on the fly" whenever they are chosen. However if the playback files have already been created once, I still don't see the need for Show on Demand to process (create) new files each and every time. If the play.lms and the play.lms.pe.lid files have been made and no changes havehappened, then they should play forever without haivng to be processed each and every time. Or maybe I am not understanding something.

Just a thought. I do see S5 ver 5.3.4 hs just been released, maybe the fix is in there.

I too have been testing 5.3.4. I see it creates the playback files successfully and only once. But when it loads the show, it just continuously keeps cycling thru the show until I "Disable Shows Immediately". Notice the time stamps of each cycle. Not sure if I'm doing anything wrong but I believe I have it configured correctly. This is on my show computer.

I did try playing a large 50 seq show using the Play.lms files in the show editor from the LORinternal folder as suggested by Default (Thanks Alan),  but the slow load delays were still happening.both with Load as needed or load all first selected. There was also decacheing going on as mentioned earlier. I have the  logs if anyone wants to see them. 

At this point I don't know what else to try. looking more and more like back to S4, just as I was getting to like S5.

I have just tested using 5.3.4 Loredit files in the 5.2.4 show player. Everything is back to normal. File compression is quick and play back is instantaneous for large files with load as needed selected. No messin’ around in LORinternal or load all files first!

I created the playback files manually  in 5.2.4 Sequencer and used them for the show in 5.2.4 showplayer. All effects added in 5.3 including a motion effect test, play back properly in 5.2.

Show restart after a file change created no problems or reprocessing.

Assuming no changes to the current version, I shall finish my editing for the year in 5.3.4 and swap 5.2.4 back in for the season playback duties.

An update to my logs. Since 5.3.4 came out, all the songs are now processed the first time thru Show Editor, if I run Show Editor again it doesn't single out certain songs to be re-processed again. Everything plays straight away in Show on Demand at least on the editing pc. I'll run a show tonight and see what the show laptop pc does. Both pc's are running 5.3.4.

The issue I have with going back to 5.2.2? is that it really screwed up animated gif files for me, making it almost impossible to sequence due to the jerkiness of the pictures. So far, so good with 5.3.4.

Phil, do you have another pc you can put the show files and run them from there? as a way to eliminate your editing pc as an issue? I know you have done much testing and probably is something that doesn't thrill you, just a thought.

I have tested with an install on a second much less capable machine with almost identical results. 

How many sequences were used in your test. A small number will play ok. With a higher sequence count once decacheing starts the delays will occur. The bigger the file the longer the loading time.

I don't know what else to try. The fact that 5.2.4 plays perfectly says it all IMO.
