Pullayniece
Hi Everyone, I was wondering what other WS2811 Smart RGB LED strip brands folks here preferred to work with in attaching to the Pixcon16 controller, Just starting out in this area and trying to get a grasp of whats out there. I am seeing standards of 10 pixels per mer, 30, 48, and 60 per m Obviously I am assuming the more pixels per m the more expensive but was just wondering how good the different brands are and what the different brands are that sell SMART RGB strips that would be used outdoors. Pullayniece
I was looking at possibly using the WS2811 standard ribbon unless there is a better standard outthere that would work with LOR
jerry72
I think the LOR will use any 2811 RGB, weather it be strips or nodes.
k6ccc
I'm using nodes and strips from Ray Wu's store on Alibabahttp://www.aliexpress.com/store/701799
mpageler
There really aren't brands of ws2811. More of an issue in finding a reliable vendor that sells and backs up the lights they sell. Most are manufacturer in China and there is a range in price/quality of led dump/smart lights in general.Several popular U.S. vendors that do winter pre-sales are holidaycoro.com and diyledexpress.com. kiplorenzo
I have been working with Ray for 2 years now. He's done well by me. I have bought a variety of his lights from 3 pixel ws2811's to the 6 pixel ws2811's to the 300 led Strip. All have worked pretty well (providing on some you lower voltage to 11volts). The 300 LED strip is impressive and yes, 65.00 per strip. and 900 channels in LOR per STRIP! So when you buy your RGB lights, know that even with RGB setup there are still 3 channels per Bulb... but I will say the colors are Fantastic.everything in my display this year changes colors and I increased the lights from 11000 to 26000. EmmienLightFan
Most are manufacturer in China and there is a range in price/quality of led dump/smart lights in general. All are made in China. I have never heard of a company that makes any RGB strips outside of China.
Need more lights
http://www.environmentalled.com/RGB-LED-Strip-5M--16-4ft--150-LEDs--White-Wire-p2387.html http://www.holidaycoro.com/Pixel-RGB-LED-Lights-s/1918.htm Just a couple I've found. I use environmental LED for all my C6 strings and C7 retro fit LED bulbs. Never had a problem with them and they aren't highway robbery. I've used Holidaycoro for other accessories. browse through both sites, they have lots of goodies. marsh28
Ray wu is now selling a slightly less bright version of the 12v strips for 12 bucks.
dgrant
One thing to make sure you check, China's idea of waterproofing is not the same as ours. Make sure, you check both ends of any strips and insure they are properly sealed. Extra sealant is advised between wires the wires coming through their seal and "Look" for tiny holes! I had nothing but trouble this year with strips that water got into. I have all brand new strips waiting for me to remove all the ones from this now passed season and replacing them due to the huge problems I had with water getting into them. Another suggestion or lesson learned, be very, very careful with the ends to insure they are strain-relief to not bend the soldered connections. They will break easily resulting in string failure. marsh28
Here are those cheap strips I was talking about. http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/promotion-5m-DC12V-WS2811-150LEDs-10pixes-m-led-digital-strip-waterproof-in-silicon-tube-IP66-WHITE/701799_32493161338.html I've asked Ray about these. He says they're slightly less bright than the normal $17 strips he sells and only have a 1 year warranty (as opposed to a 2 year warranty) b/c they are from a new vendor. IMO, Ray is the one and ONLY guy to get pixels, power supplies, etc. from. He delivers within a weeks and his customer service is surprisingly great. steve synek
I will add my 2 cents on the number of lights per meter. I found the 30 per meter to be ideal on a ribbon. I used the 60 per meter on some stars and found them to be overpowering to view or photograph. Also they take more power which should be considered. Following another comment here on the forum, I turned them down to 15% and that worked trying to take a video of the display this year. In my opinion, the 30's still look like individual lights, while the 60's look like neon strips. Just my thoughts. Steve
marsh28
Agree steve. Also, 30 per meter cuts down on the number of channels you need.
