New Neighbor

Met my new neighbor today. Moved in across the street so he will get the bulk of my show in his windows. Asked my usual first question: Hope you like Christmas :)

He had been warned by the other neighbors already. Said he hadn't planned on decorating this year but will do something. I love how my show has inspired others on my block to at least put up some lights. I used to be the only one on the street who had anything up at all.

He did mention he might buy one of those Starry Night laser things. Told him if he did I would have to vandalize it :)

I don't really care if they like christmas lights or not. As long as traffic isn't unreasonable and the display is not over the top...they can just live with it for a little while.

If they complaint, I'll just point out that I could stop looking the other way for all the minor city laws/code viotions that occur in the neighborhood.  So if the police come to my door for a light complaint, they will be coming much more in the future for other things.

We had a new neighbor move in back in September and when I introduced myself we began talking about the neighborhood in general.

I told her 1) either buy TONS of candy for Halloween or go out for the night (we get HUNDREDS of kids) and 2) our lights are the biggest in the neighborhood.  She seemed very excited about both prospects.

I completed my programming this weekend, including making a recording that basically said, "if you see a lot of cars lined up behind you, consider driving on so others can see the show and traffic can flow normally."  I'm hoping that is enough to stave off any potential complaints.   Although my show is only 13 minutes long, with 17 minutes of filler music after that so it can run every 30 minutes.

With an attitude like that you just might get a lot of complaints.

The worst thing that can happen is getting on the news.  If that ever happens, then expect lots of cars.

I decided a long time ago, if my display becomes a problem in the neighborhood, I will stop doing it.

Jerry - same for us.  We are new to LOR this year, but because of where we are located in the neighborhood, we can always move to just being a "static" display with relative ease if it becomes a problem.

And then I'll insist on moving out to the country where we have plenty of land so that we can do the show without bothering anyone.

Benefit of a medium sized town and no housing authority. I make the paper but not TV.

So far enough people drive by to make me proud of doing it. Not enough to be a bother. All the old people on my street tucked into bed by 8pm anyway :) I like to sit out and watch my show, especially on Xmas eve and usually have a driveway open house with family. Always nice to hear the good comments. Just wish I could make a little parking in the area, have only normal street room. Most just drive by, not really staying long enough to see more than one song. Some walk over and watch it. Perhaps a few benches are in order :)

I use FM transmitter and a speaker outside.

Normally pretty few people coming by after Xmas and before NY. NY deff the last night things run.

I'm in a subdivision in a somewhat rural area.  Thankfully (for them) I don't have any neighbors directly in front of me.  There are however 2 houses up the street that will be in the line of sight.  I'm thinking a couple of fruit baskets are in order.  $40 to keep the cops off my front porch is a small price to pay.

That would be nice of you.

I figure bringing them the joy of Christmas is enough.  But seriously, seeing how my street has gone from dull and gloomy to many now being lit I must have reawakened the spirit in some :)

Even if just a string along the eves.

Here is one of the reasons to meet your neighbors and trying to keep peace with them.

I just had a neighbor contact me to see if I would like to use a train engine that he made in my display. It is 8 feet long, 4 foot tall and about 3 foot wide. He showed me a picture and it looked great. Way too big for my yard though.

It's our first year doing this but we hosted a premiere last night and all our neighbors stopped by. We did preemptively warn them one month ago that we were planning on doing this and only heard positive things. Only one neighbor (aptly named the grinch) typically causes problems but everyone has agreed that the potential traffic and kids stopping by will definitely liven up the neighborhood.

Just a few ideas from our premiere we hosted it for about 30 people, had hot chocolate for the kids with a hot chocolate bar, and a coffee bar for the adults. Every family brought a treat that ranged from cookies to cupcakes and the kids definitely loved it. We had blankets for those who wanted to sit on the drive way and everyone loved it.

I did my cold run tonight. I had lots of cars parked watching.

It seemed odd with people watching me adjust wires on the roof.
