Windows 7 on a Mac

Anyone tried running LOR on Windows 7 running in Boot Camp on a Mac?

I am typically a Mac user, but have a nice HP laptop for my LOR work. HOWEVER, now that my Halloween show is up and running that means I can't work on sequences during the time the show is running. I thought about adding the Boot Camp partition to my Mac to enable me to run Windows 7 (which is what I have on the laptop) and then continue to play around with my Christmas show in the evenings.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated!

I use Parallels with my Mac and run XP in a window which works great.  I thought about upgrading to 7 but XP works great, so I haven't done anything yet.

Hello dear people

I already use for many years vmware fusion, with windows 7 also for a long time on my imac 27

No problems at all, not using bootcamp, because I am able to use mac part at the same time with fusion, e.g. Nutcracker on osx together with lor on w7.

Even using both systems in one window is possible, using the Unity option, but I personally find that confusing for me.

Happy sequencing

I have experience with both Boot Camp and Virtual Box. Started running into problems with Virtual Box after a month or so of running LOR S/W. I switched to Boot Camp. I have run it for two years. It works fantastic. Windows has never run better and I support windows for a living (corporate support) running on Dells (about 500). Executive staff uses Macs, which I support as well.

I am considering Fusion or Parallels and that's how I found this post. I want to have the OS X access as well.

Please share any advice / experiences with Fusion and Parallels.

Why are you considering the change to Fusion or Parallels if Boot camp works so well.

Perhaps, I can answer my own question though...I take it in Boot Camp you are strictly a Windows machine or a Mac - not both at the same time and those others allow both to happen at the same time?????

Exactly.  Boot Camp is provided by Apple to allow Windows to run on a Mac. It really makes running Windows on a Mac easy. But, just as you stated, when you boot to Windows you are only in Windows.  I just really (really) prefer Macs.

The VM will give me a partial solution to not having a universal LOR app (curses Dot Net). I will still be able to run OS X and I will be a happy little camper.

There is one caveat to running Windows (VM or Bootcamp) on a Mac that you also run OS X on, is Virus / Malware infection. Windows is vulnerable more so that OS X (based on my many years of experience). Once a machine is infected it could easily damage the drive (logically speaking). So if you are running Windows on any platform, make sure you use a reputable AV/AM.

I misspoke in an earlier post as to why i stopped using Virtual Box. It was not LOR software.  I was experimenting with Madrix s/w and I ran into nasty video problems (openGL was over-cooking my grits).  VB had a problem with running a OpenGL that was Mac video card compatible. I  just could not find a driver that was not a problem. Madrix is a really cool piece of s/w, but it was a $460 mistake on my part. It did not do what I wanted it to and it was going to require more tweaking than sequencing a fresh new song. If I remember correctly, using VB and LOR S/W it worked well.

So I may visit VB again. The price is right (free), but the support and the not so polished implementation are somewhat a concern.  I will post me decision and experiences.

  • 2 weeks later...

i'm using bootcamp to run win 7 on a macbook pro 17" and macbook 13".  i use the mac pro 17" as my main programming computer and used the macbook 13" to run my halloween show.  i was using an old think book to run the show, but it started acting weird, or at least the show was doing odd things (stuff not coming on when it should).  i swapped out the ibm for the mac and it ran fine.
