What is with the crazy prices on used equipment?

Ebay is full of used,  outdated controllers that are fetching upwards of $300.  Who is paying that for them?  Gotta be noobs that don't know any better. A brand new v3 is less than $300.  I wouldn't buy a v1 controller, and wouldn't spend more than $150 on a V2.  It's nice to know that this equipment holds it's value, but damn. Am I missing something on the value of these older controllers?

just remember the old P T Barnum saying.   There is a sucker born every minute.  as far as i am concerned used equipment is USED equipment.  i would buy a used v2 around 100.00 and a used v3 for 150.00.  anything you buy used you gotta remember buyer beware

Did you see the person selling four CTB16PC controllers and sequences for $2,000?

you forget that also includes the faces along with numerous other lights

Again, who are we to say what a seller can get for an item?  If someone buys it for that price, that is their business.

I have said before that I appreciate all of you who want to grab these people and point them in the right direction.  I find that honorable and noble.   But if the seller and the buyer are both happy, is it any of our concern?

Buying used isn't bad just as long as the person selling them is honest in they'er dealings.  I sold 20 of mine anywhere from $100.00 to $150 CAD & all in working order.  Buyers paid the shipping cost. I sold about 80% of my display.  I even bought used controllers & they worked without any issue.  However most used controller I saw on sale were anywhere from $100 to $175 USD.

Not bashing the sellers in anyway, and not trying to point anyone in any direction.  In fact, I couldn't be happier that your equipment seems to hold it's value.  Just wondering why it happens. Thought I might be missing something on it. Trust me, I am all for free enterprise.

It is the same no matter what the item is.

If someone wants the absolute best price on something it takes work, they have to shop for it to find it.

Many people will always buy the first thing they see no matter how the price compares to other sellers of the same item.

I do crazy projects all the time. Most times I will shop for value to be able to do the project for as little as possible. Other times I will buy the expensive stuff because I want it. I know I could do something similar for half the money but there are times when I want the best and I am willing to pay the price to get it.

Our equipment has always seemed to hold its value.  Used prices, while generally less than new, hover right around 80-90% of the new price.  Unless it has been abused, our equipment should last quite a while -- and if you do have a problem we service them even if you didn't buy directly from us.

We have a good warranty (even if it doesn't extend to a used purchaser), good customer service, and therefore have a good name.  That has a lot to do with our stuff holding value.

DevMike, I have read in a few posts about LOR having a trade-in program where you can trade-in some older equipment to get credit for newer equipment. I have some older gen 2 CTB16 that can't be used on high speed networks and I can't find any info on the LOR website, does it actually exist or is it a myth?

Before anyone comments, yes I know I could just sell them but it is just a pain.

Yes the trade in program absolutely exists.

You can open a trouble ticket and say that you want to send in 2 old CTB16s and want G3 CTB16s.  You then ship us your old controllers.  Once we receive them, the cost will be 60% of the list cost of a new G3 CTB16 + shipping.

Please remember that it is for 'comparable' equipment only.  If it's a CTB16PC we will give you 40% off list for a CTB16PC, We can't give you 40% off a LOR1602 as that would be a different controller.  It is also ONE FOR ONE.  To get one at a discount you have to send one in.  NO you do not get your old equipment back.  NO, it's not 40% off a sale price.

We also offer this for competitors equipment.  If you have a 16 channel Animated Lighting controller and want to move to LOR, we'lll give you 40% off a residential controller. Want to dump that Alphapix 16 thing?  Send it to us and we'll sell you a PixCon16 at 40% off.

DON'T ASK:  A Mr Christmas or Gemmy Light Show is NOT 'comparable' equipment to a 16 channel AC controller.

Have to ask, is a working Mr. Christmas comparable to the new 4 channel?

No.  But it is comparable to a garbage can ;):P

... or is that 'compatible'?

So we can't get 40% off a garbage can with a Mr Christmas trade in?  :P

This topic always reminds me of that Jack in the Box commercial.

Jack asks dude what he does and dude tells him , "try you burger, tell you if I like it or not."

Jack asked the price and it was like $4000.00.

Jack says, "Wow! Any takers?"

Dude says, "Not yet, but all I need is one"

Wow, that plane flew over my head super fast.

Didn't get it. Why would Jack be asking the price if it's his burger?
