Windows 10 Upgrade Process

First, let me say that, as an OS, I like Windows 10 -- a lot. But over the last 2 days I have developed an entirely separate opinion of the upgrade process...

I have attempted to upgrade 4 PC's to Windows 10 at my house.

  • A desktop running Windows 10 Preview upgraded to Windows 10 Production went smoothly -- not too surprising
  • My wife's laptop running Windows 8.1 upgraded successfully; although there was a problem with the HP print drivers that caused any program that tried to print to crash. I had to uninstall the drivers from HP, and then add the printer back using whatever drivers Windows 10 chose. After that, no issues and the wife is happy:)
  • The upgrade of my main laptop running Windows 7 failed part way through and reverted back to Windows 7. Nothing got corrupted; but there is no information as to why the upgrade failed and I don't plan to try it again.
  • The upgrade of my daughter's new laptop running WIndows 8.1 failed part way through. The upgrade process reverted back to the original OS, and the laptop seems ok. Again, I'm not going to try the upgrade process again.

So, while I like Windows 10 itself, I think there are some major flaws in the upgrade process. Therefore, my advice would be to wait. If you want Windows 10 right now, go out and buy a new PC with it already installed.

thanks for the update.  I have win10 reserved and it's ready to install but I'm waiting awhile for a couple reasons, one of which is to let all the glitches like you experience solved first.  sounds like win8 does fine but win 7 may not do as well which is what I have here on two of our laptops.

I ve installed Windows 10 on a windows 7 laptop and a 8.1 laptop with no problems whatsoever. I'm getting ready to install on the wife's desktop that currently has windows 7.

I downloaded windows 10 from their webpage because it never fully downloaded on it's own. I did find the download folder  C:\$windows -b or something like that. Downloading it on my own it seems like it ran fine.

My laptop auto downloaded and installed it over night. I woke up this morning and had to log in.

I use notebook everyday to copy and paste receipts and misc to save in various folder, but I can not find notebook any more. I am very unhappy with that. I was rudely forced to try OneNote but I can't save entries where I want it forces you to what it wants to do with your notes ....... not a fan yet!

I'm nervous. I got the notification. But I haven't done it yet.

I got no notification, it just downloaded and installed - not a fan of that at all!

The only problem I had was with my show laptop. I was missing a dll file for the comm listener to work. Installed the drivers and all is good.

I ugraded two laptops and both went smooth as silk. One was a fairly new Windows 8.1 from Dell, the other a very, very old Sony Vaio running Windows 7 (Pentium Dual Core, 2GB RAM). So far I am very impressed with the ease of the update process. I plan to do clean installations on some of my PCs after the downloaded upgrade. There are good how-to articles on that process.

Ok I have a problem with my backup show computer.

I dug it out of the closet and got it working again. Apparently it was on a trial version of Windows 7 and now the trial has expired. I no longer have the activation key so I can't activate that copy of Windows. I can't upgrade to 10 because I don't have a "genuine" installation no matter what. I called MS and they can't help me without the key.

I remember buying 2 licenses through a college deal while my wife was in Grad school, but there is no way to retrieve the details for that now as far as I know.

Short of buying another copy, is there anything else I can do?

EvilMonkey you can get a little more time (but you won't be able to upgrade).

In the run type cmd,

Right click Command prompt and select Run As Administrator.

Then type slmgr -rearm

Hit Enter

Now you have another 90 days!

I think you can do it 3 times...

I updated my win 7 comp and win 8.1 both with no problems really with doing it... But,,,, After looking at the Win 10 and the way it operated and worked went back to my win 7 and 8.1.

I didnt like the icons all over win 10... And I for sure dont want or like the idea of having to try to learn things all over again each time a new windows operating system comes out..

I had much rather have the old WIN XP back when it comes to looking for what I want to use.

I dont need a computer that tries to talk to me when I want to try to use it.... or most of the extra bugs, icons, apps, and whistles they added to it.

For many of us... simple is really better... same with my cell phone.... Its a phone for crying out loud...

I dont need a 400 dollar phone when its all I use it for... I dont need to play games, surf, check e mail etc. on it... Keep it simple... lol

I like the tree that was there on the left side when i clicked on my computer and explore much better then trying to go threw a bunch of app pictures and trying to remember what APP is where... why cant they just call a program a program instead of a app etc... or leave something alone when it was working so well....

Ohhhhhh wishing all my computers were still on win XP..

Found out how to stop the Update to win 10 popup.

find the KB3035583 in your installed updates file and remove it..  If you have automatic updates install on you will need to remove it each time you restart or you can just run updates yourself and pick what you want and don't pick to download / install that one..

Monkey... did you search your old e mails to see if maybe you still have the one with your key in it?..

I know I had the same prob one time with my AutoCad Architect desk top and found a old e mail that still had it... works fine now..

I now try to make a point of e mailing myself codes for things like that and make sure I save them somewhere.
