I just ordered new Service  Flags for my 4th of July this year..

Going to fly flags for all the services.. which includes the CG which some people never recognize..

http://www.united-states-flag.com/military.html

I plan on having all the different service songs set with lights as a melody which I am already working on as well as my archs, fire sticks, etc. which I am also working on etc.

I picked up my new flag poles yesterday at HF I am planning on having all the service flags at about 18 ft .. the US flag at 20 with the POW MIA just under it. And just in case you are wondering... all the sizes are the same at 3 X 5

I come from a Military Family in which over half of us have been in to retirement or at least a few years...,

even my wife as in the Army as a Combat Medic/ Nurse for 10 years.

I have three kids and a grand son that are currently in and the oldest is thinking of retiring in the next couple years.

I play in the VFW band of Colorado. We are one of the oldest VFW bands in the US, our first memorial day service was in 1888 (It was called Decoration day and was for the civil war veterans).

We always do the salute to the armed forces. Our salute has Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard.. and .. The Merchant Marines.

People may not know that the merchant marines are considered part of the armed forces during times of war. They suffered the highest casualty rate of any branch ,1 in 26 merchant marines died while in service.

At the yearly VFW convention, we had a few people ask about their service song, The Merchant Marines. They were WWII veterans and no one ever played their service song. Our conductor contacted the Merchant Marines in Washington, DC and we modified our music so we do six service songs now.

The motto of the VFW is "Honoring the dead by helping the living.", we strive to do that.

thanks for all who have served.

cool... i will be going on line and will see about getting their flag also..

I hadn't thought about it but yes... you are 101% right on there.. I was kinda thinking they were activated during the war and were in the navy... my mistake there... Merchant Marines will be included in my Flag Line.
