Does anybody have experience in buying lasers for their show?

I'm looking for some help from my fellow light show enthusiasts concerning lasers. Does anybody currently use them? Did somebody use them in the past but no longer and why not?  Any suggestions on brand names, types, models, sizes etc.? Any suggestions or comments are appreciated! If you have a link showing your light show with lasers please share it? I have done some research on flame projectors as I was/am also considering them.

I would suggest searching around the forums as there are a lot of posts on the subject.  Safety and legality are the first two that come to mind..

There is one really good laser, that allows animations. They need ILDA (Or something like that) and they can be controlled by a computer

There are actually a lot of laser projectors out there.  Some cheap and some really good.  If you use one in your show you are limited to 5mw unless you have a varianced system.  It also requires you to have full control at all times with a real person watching the area and they must have the ability to shut the system down immediately should someone get to close.  There are a lot of rules you are "supposed" to follow for safety and to work in your favor in a liability issue.

ILDA is the International Laser Display Assoc.  There are ILDA standards for many things laser including ILDA format for frames and animation... as well as signal connection and specifications.  Much much more too.

Like I have said in the past,  there are a lot of people offering information on these forums that really have no clue about lasers or the legal issues surrounding them. There are also some that do know what they are talking about.  I truly suggest that if you want lasers in your display you should find out what "in fact" is needed to be safe and legal.  Fines are big and can include loss of your gear.  It is not impossible to do lasers legally for your display, you just have a lot of hoops to jump thru.

Holiday Coro sells garden lasers that I use. I see more of these being sold by other vendors as well....seasonal entertainment for example.

Depends what you want to do with your lasers. And rules vary by state. California being the worst of course....as always. Rules around airports are federal though. So if you live near one peek at the rules....Google it.

The garden lasers I use are the firefly moving lasers and at 2.5 mw are very low power. I can hardly see them in the video but they look good in person. They are a set design....so not as much fun as finding one that can draw things. But it is something different that makes em eww and ahh.

QVC sold some of these lasers. Designed to shine in the trees....I know that they do not require an off switch in hand or someone close to turn them off. They are just not powerful enough. Google landscape lasers for more info.

I control it with incoming power....on and off only to release the fireflies.

Now, the bigger lasers that draw.....they are beautiful and do have rules. So that requires more research on your part. That is why I have garden lasers. Less rules.

Good luck,

Sax

You are most likely talking about the "Bliss" laser light.  That shoots thru a gradiant and the beams of light are less than 5mW each.. That is how they get it approved.  Pretty weak in the scheme of real laser show materials.

I use those QVC colored lasers to light the front of my house and shrubs before my show kicks off. They are actually pretty bright. I just put them on a simple timer so I didn't eat up a lor channel.

But you are prob talking about bigger lasers. Sorry got no info on that.

other then some things already mentioned... be real careful about you local regulations when it comes to Plane flight paths.. airport locations, approach and depart patterns etc. even a local air port will have regs and laws about use of them... be sure and check with your local PD as they may have some local regs also.

I know on a military base they cannot be used and within 5 miles of the Edwards AFB flight path they are not allowed to be used..

I can use them but I am very limited as to the direction, power, and color I would be allowed to use also because I live about 5 miles from Plant 42, the Skunk Works etc. Airforce flight test Facility at Palmdale Ca.

I am on the side of a mountain in the foot hills and Cannot under any instances let them point down into or across the Antelope valley as there is 40 plus miles of visibility from my house.

  • 2 months later...

On youtube, search for "Asylum 49 laser".  That's how I've been using a laser setup (not quite the norm for laser use :) ).  I can give more details if that's what you're looking for.
