Don
Today (03/31/15) is an industry declared "World Backup Day." The headline of this post is from an email I received from a reputable company. They are offering a one year subscription to Backblaze for $25 for a years worth of unlimited backups. This even includes external hard drives! To take advantage of the offer, follow this link. I make no commission on this link - Just passing it along for those who still don't have a backup plan in place.
MikeERWNC
Don't back up your stuff to the "cloud."You don't know who will look at it. Remember this is data that you want to be secure, not shared around the world. You would be better off spending that 25.00 on a 64GB memory stick and putting that stick in a fire proof safe with your car titles and house deed. You don't need to buy software to backup your system. You know what is important. 25.00 will buy a lot of lights.
Don
Given recent news about how one US government agency has potentially been able to modify the firmware in a vast portion of the harddrives on the market (or was it use that firmware to their advantage) your data may not be safe from prying eyes on your own computer. Just food for thought.
Max-Paul
Ok, that is the government agency. But are they likely to clean out your bank account, steal your Tax returns? But some cloud location that is hacked is more likely to lead up to ID theft. I concure, dont put anything on the cloud that you dont want to see pop up in china, Russia or some other 3rd world country. Or the pimple faced hacking kid down the street. If you really want to back-up your data or whole hard drive. Get a two disk NAS and run a mirrored Raid and get some software like NovaBackup to automate the process. Don
There are ways to protect your data that is stored in the cloud, and prevent others from seeing what is there. Just sayin'.
k6ccc
If you do backup locally, keep a copy off site. If your house is burglarized and the bad dude takes your backups, you are screwed. Or worse if your house burns down... Here is what I do. I keep all my files on my server which is using a RAID array. The RAID array is backed up to an external hard drive every weekend which is taken into work (26 miles away). Things that I put lots of effort into (like heavy duty sequencing sessions) get copied to Google Drive as soon as I finish for the evening. I don't put anything I want private onto Google Drive unless I encrypt it before I upload it (and I don't normally do that at all). For example, family photos can go into the cloud, my financial records do not.
Bizywk
That's an excellent practice K6ccc. Right out of the cyber protection guidelines.
