aesl1982
So as we await out house to finish being built. I thought about some stuff today and questions I talked to HOA about. They are on board and ready for the display so that's a plus. But it is a gated community with guards and after 6pm u have to have a resident sticker. So my questions are has anybody dealt with or dealing with this. How do you go about the people coming to see the display getting in. The community is over 400 houses so it's huge but this gate thing is making me second guess moving in over there
George Simmons
Sounds to me like your viewers will be limited pretty much to residents and their guests.
Max-Paul
I suppose you might want to do like a few others have. Do you have a family member that lives near by that would be willing to host the show on their house?
aesl1982
Hosting at the parents house would be an option. I guess I'll have to talk to guards and HOA about letting guest in if the day they are there for the Christmas display. May make a website and Facebook with a map and the guards let them in if they have map.
George Simmons
I can't see how the HOA or the guards will go for anything like that. I'm guessing the overwhelming majority of the residents chose to live there specifically because there WAS guarded gates. I can only imagine the outcry this would raise. Darryl Lambert
Didn't Holdman have this same issue? One year they allowed strangers in. The next year they didn't. So he moved his display to his parents house.
aesl1982
Well I'll have to talk to them in more detail because they display will go on. Even after only one year in. I'm hooked and have huge plans for this year and next. If I can't get the public in for the show then I won't be living in that subdivision. jstorms
I live behind a gate, and it works. I can't handle traffic that stretches for a half mile, and the gate keeps the traffic under control. The show is a much more humble affair with family, friends and neighbors in camp chairs with refreshments. While we don't get to share the lights with as many people as I would like, we do have a better quality experience. More songs, interaction with neighbors, kids can run and play without worry of being hit by cars. Much more neighborly, much less chaotic. We'll get anywhere from a couple dozen to 200 people coming out to see the lights this way. One thing our neighborhood does is a family night where everyone goes around looking at lights and typically we get it setup so the gates are kept open during those times. Then we'll run lights for the various running clubs that swing by, the bunco ladies, and other people that swing by. Honestly, if it weren't for the gates I'd have to drop out of the hobby. aesl1982
Never thought of it that way john. That's a great point as too much traffic could cause a headache I could imagine

Get community support for it. Get the community involved - do the display as a larger...community event. Bring everyone together for the holidays. Just a thought. Old Sarge
I bought a house that was covered by a HOA for a while.... this was about 12 years ago.. I got rid of it as soon as I could after I found out that the people who are on the board makes the most rules that everyone else has to follow... Its not that easy to keep rules from being changed if they want to add new rules, and you aren't on the board of elected people. It hit the fan when they told me that I could not have spring colored or any colors in my back yard on my patio because the neighbors could see it from their upstairs window and that colors were not allowed to be seen from outside and all patio, deck balcony furniture had to be of a neutral color if it can be seen by anyone. wasn't allowed after the first year... ( They said I had to many Christmas lights) all static but about 20,000 of them up and no halloween decorations were allowed to be seen from the streets. Never again will I live where there is a HOA involved that can tell me what I can and or Cannot do on my own property...
mpageler
If you enjoy doing the display and 400 families can enjoy it, then consider it a successful display.
James Hill
Darryl is correct...Holdman had his show in his gated community for a bit...raised funds for kids...then they ended up putting a stop to the lights....so he moved everything out to his parents house....even bigger now!!! He only had it at his parents for one year, then he moved it back home for a year or 2. But he hasn't had a display is quite a few years
ezimnow
HOA's and Gated communities have their place. It can work both ways as you can see for Jstorms its working out great...As far as Holdman he wasn't as lucky but glad he found a way to work around it.. IMHO his dispaly was probably the best I've ever seen...and to think it was all incandescent at that time....LOL...the cheapest way to go!
