I Want Something New!

As we start out 3rd year of newbiedom, want to get more creative.   There's the oldies but goodies props:  Hoops, Circles, CCR trees, Arches (Small and Driveway), 16 chan Coro-Candy Canes, Spinners, Light Stickes, VU meters, Mini-trees, Face Characters of all kinds, etc, which are all GREAT, but I want something NEW!

We're making a number of 24" square white coro-Christmas Presents with a big red felt bow that will populate all around our yard this year.   They will have eight chambers (4 chambers X 2 stacked layers)  lit with RGB squares or rectangles and dark coro for internal dividers minimizing light bleed.  They all beind sealed together with our trusty glue gun.   I'm thinking of effects that will include single color pop on/off matched in time with other props, counter spins where the top 4 compartments spin one direction and the bottom 4 compartments spin the other, or even checkerboard flashes.   They will have  big red felt bows and ribbons just like real presents under the tree to help color separation.   Of course, we'll have a few under our CCR tree as well.

They're inexpensive and can even house the controllers mounted in a weather protected area under the bottom layer as a self contained prop.   Picture to follow.

That's our breakthrough this year.     Do you have a NEW idea?    C'Mon I know you do - please share.   How will you keep it fresh this year?

I'm building a 48 CH " tree " that will have 8 colors of lights and 6 separate areas or limbs that can be lit. I'm hoping to be able to make it dance. It will also be able to be taken apart for ease of installation and storage and the base will also double as a waterproof housing for 3 1602's. I'll take pics as I build....

Lots of projects:

  • Starburst of 12 arms, each 40 inches long, each lit with WS2811 smart strips. Metal frame already welded: 7 feet wide, 10 feet tall. Two of them.

  • Ring tree of 20 rings, each 1 meter in circumference spaced 6 inches apart. Populated with WS2811 smart strips. Two metal frames already built.

  • Hula Hoop balls; 15 half spheres, stacked up in a pyramid shape with WS2811 smart strips. Several members already have these and they look great

  • RGB Snowflakes; sold by Target with white blinky lights. Added 26 RGB dumb modules.

  • Spiral CCRs, like ones George Simmons has in his display.

  • Bubble sticks; like fire sticks, but with angel eye RGB rings. Working to get them waterproof. More information

  • Video mapping; projector(s) with creative graphics shining on the house.

  • More use of DMX moving lights.

  • Convert piano keys to RGB

Wow Ken, I haven't seen a version of DMX lights that have  strobe effects before, and there's a tutorial to boot!     What's your source of supply?

Could you be a bit more specific?

Ken - I haven't seen these lights before.  Where did you get them?

Hey Carniac -  how much bacon will be involved in their construction?
