Guys,

Do you know if LOR offer any warranty/protection on their units? Been trouble shooting why 2 of my lights didnt work most of Christmas and when I took the show down today I saw this in one of my five boxes?

That looks like a critter attack.

A lot of times some stupid critter (worm, lizard, whatever) will crawl into the box thinking it is a nice warm place to live.  Next thing they're between a hot and a neutral glowing red like the element in your toaster.

Open ticket and request an RMA for repair.  We'll either fix it or offer you a replacement.

I'll take a pic some day of what I did to three of my triacs.

I have a traffic light that I rewired to control the lights individually. However, I allowed one of the wires to touch something it wasn't supposed to touch in the traffic light, and it blew out 3 of my triacs in that box, causing them to look like yours!  I fixed the traffic light wiring problem and now the light works well, although I can't use those 3 channels (there's actually a 4th that doesn't work for some reason too).

No, I never contacted LOR about it, since it was obviously my fault.

And for the record, I actually have 2 traffic lights, and hooked up this whole system in my backyard in the summer.  The end effect was I had two functioning traffic lights that used 6 channels total: separate green, yellow, and red on both.  A few more traffic lights, and I could practically control an intersection with LOR!  (Note: As cool as that would be, I don't recommend this)

Even if it was your fault, we can try to repair those channels if you like.  Simply open a trouble ticket.  The most you will pay is $25 + shipping both ways if we can repair it.  If we can't, we can offer you a replacement controller at 40% off the list price.

It was my first controller...and quite a learning experience!  I replaced the fuse quite a few times before I realized exactly how much amperage I was running thru that thing! Good times.

OK, I'll be in touch.  Thanks!

Am I the only one who didn't know that a 40% warranty discount required a trade-in controller? I really got blind-sided by that "rule".

Now trying to determine which way to go, replace card in my controller or get new one at some per cent discount plus trade in.

Any help/advise would be appreciated.

Every business model has their ups and downs but remember that LOR is a business! They are trying to make money. For what they sell to us, personally I think the price is reasonable other than their CCR's. They can't survive as a business if they give things away or replace for free, anything and everything. So simply put, there are "limits" to what they can do and what they will do. If I was in your position and needed a new board (Bany), if its fried, just buy a new board and be done with it. You already have the chassis, plug/pigtails and etc..

Bany,

Blind-sided? Not sure what blind-sided you. I personally feel they have one of the best warranties out there. Name, on one hand, all the businesses you can think of that will discount their products to 40% off just because the product we purchased failed to last a lifetime. I'm in my 4th year and not one LOR item I purchased has even slightly hiccupped. If one failed after 4 years and they offered me 40% off - I'd take it and run! Back to blind-sided. Why should any business offer you a discount that is most likely at or below their mfg cost, well, as a "just because" discount? If it wasn't a discount with trade, then it's just a discount. If they offered you a "just because discount" that they didn't offer to the rest of us, the lawyers would try to destroy this great company. +1 on David's comments - they are a business.

Just my thoughts.

The warranty page is here:

http://www1.lightorama.com/warranties/

Unconditional Lifetime Replacement Policy:

Regardless of current end user, any Light-O-Rama hardware device that fails for any reason (e.g. eaten by dog, no longer like color) can be replaced with the same or current equivalent unit for 60% of the current list price of the new unit.  The end-user is responsible for shipping the old unit back to Light-O-Rama and for the shipping costs of the new unit.  In the event that there is no current equivalent for an Light-O-Rama device, Light-O-Rama will make every attempt to work something equitable out. Light-O-Rama will also honor this policy for any other manufacturer’s device for which we currently have a comparable device.

Emphasis mine.

Edit:

I found your ticket in the help desk where we sent you the same information on 2/06/2015.  I also see where on 2/10 we offered you the 40% off not only on a replacement board but also on an upgrade to a new G3 controller, your choice.   You selected the new controller.  On 2/22 you stated that you wanted the old controller returned.  The above policy states that you ship us the old unit to get the 40% off.  Since you want it back, we can't offer you the 40%.  BUT rather than charge you the list price of the new controller, we offered to discount it to the 2014 Summer sale price.

I don't know what else we could do.  We've gone well above and beyond our warranty.  You do understand why we want the old board returned to us, right?  If we didn't require the old board everyone would purchase the most inexpensive board we sell, "break it", and then have a life time pass at buying new controllers at 40% off.

My, my. LOR has always been, and always be a great vendor to work with.

Try taking your laptop or other purchased equipment back for the manufacturer AFTER the warranty expires. LOR has fixed (or attempted to fix) several of my oldest controllers. $25 was nothing after I got 10 years of use out of them. One controller they could not completely fix, because of something I did, but they still tried, and did a few other things to the controller to refurb it a bit.

I have had good luck with having most of my controllers lying on the ground, and no crispy critters. What I do, is to mount the controllers on a 1x12x2' piece of wood, with a 2x2 at the top end. The wood helps keep the controller/plugs out of the lawn, the 2x2 provides a bit of a ramp should catastrophic deluge soak it.

Thank you all for the responses and the advice, I really appreciate it.

Apparently I am the only one who did not understand the terms of the warranty. I will read things more carefully.

And I do love LOR products.  And while I may have misunderstood, LOR folks were still great to work with.
